Tombstone vs. Wyatt Earp: A Head‑to‑Head Look at the Performances

There are some clear winners.

In the early ’90s, two large‑scale westerns raced to theaters with strikingly similar subject matter. One was the Kurt Russell–driven Tombstone, the other a Kevin Costner vehicle simply called Wyatt Earp. I recently rewatched both, and it’s not hard to understand why Tombstone is generally considered the superior film.

Before diving into the actor matchups, a few thoughts about how each movie uses its characters.

The Earp wives make a stronger impression in Wyatt Earp, but they still don’t play a major narrative role. Meanwhile, the opposite happens with the Cowboys: Tombstone gives them more presence, while Wyatt Earp reduces them to background threats.

And honestly, if Wyatt Earp were a basketball team, Kevin Costner would be called a ball hog. There was a lot of potential to develop the ensemble, but the focus on Wyatt crowds everyone else out. Tombstone is a much more balanced production, giving its supporting cast real room to breathe.

With that, on to the matchups.

Wyatt Earp: Kurt Russell vs. Kevin Costner

Winner: Kurt Russell

Costner’s Wyatt comes off stiff and unusually cold — possibly intentional but not especially engaging. Russell gives the character more dimension and charisma, and it’s easy to see why his version resonated more with audiences.

Virgil Earp: Sam Elliott vs. Michael Madsen

Winner: Sam Elliott

Madsen isn’t bad and sports a respectable mustache, but nobody out‑mustaches Sam Elliott in a western. Elliott’s Virgil carries a sense of strength and calm resolve that Madsen’s portrayal never quite matches.

Morgan Earp: Bill Paxton vs. Linden Ashby

Winner: Bill Paxton

At the OK Corral, Paxton’s Morgan shows courage despite clearly feeling fear — a very human touch. He also gets the far more memorable death scene. Ashby’s version just doesn’t leave the same impression.

Doc Holliday: Val Kilmer vs. Dennis Quaid

Winner: Val Kilmer

Quaid deserves real credit. He dropped weight to portray a man dying of tuberculosis, and if you listen closely, he’s quite funny. But Kilmer’s performance is on another level — arguably the best of his career. The bar scene between Doc and Johnny Ringo is unforgettable and seals the win.

Johnny Behan: Jon Tenney vs. Mark Harmon

Winner: Mark Harmon

Neither role is especially large, but Harmon delivers a slimier, more memorable Behan. His occasional smirk alone qualifies him for the edge here.

Josie: Dana Delany vs. Joanna Going

Winner: Dana Delany

Going’s Josie mostly serves as Wyatt’s cheerleader. Delany’s Josie feels more independent, more nuanced, and far more interesting as a character.

Curly Bill: Powers Boothe vs. Lewis Smith

Winner: Powers Boothe

Smith’s Curly Bill in Wyatt Earp feels like a drugstore cowboy. Boothe brings intelligence, menace, and a warped charm — exactly the mix needed to run a criminal outfit. Even if he somehow couldn’t hit Kurt Russell at point‑blank range.

Johnny Ringo: Michael Biehn vs. Norman Howell

Winner: Michael Biehn

Biehn plays Ringo as a dangerously unhinged killer — a standout performance. Howell, known mostly for stunt work, barely gets enough material to register, and his Ringo is dispatched so quickly that without Doc calling his shot, you might not know who got killed.

Final Thoughts

Tombstone simply makes better use of its ensemble, giving each character space to matter. Wyatt Earp has moments, and a few strong performances, but it often feels like it’s serving only one character.
