ABSTRACT

This article examines the convergence between product engineering and fashion design as an emerging field of innovation in contemporary apparel. We argue that brands founded by professionals with dual training — technical and creative — present systemic advantages in quality, scalability, and sustainability that purely creative or purely technical brands cannot replicate. The article proposes an integration model between the two disciplines and discusses implications for professional training and the competitiveness of the Brazilian textile industry.

1. INTRODUCTION

The dichotomy between technique and creativity has been a recurring theme in organizational studies and the pedagogy of creative professions. In the fashion sector, this dichotomy manifests itself particularly acutely: designers without technical knowledge make product decisions that are productively unfeasible; engineers without creative sensibility produce efficiently but without cultural relevance. The industry pays the price in creative brands that die from preventable operational problems — and in efficient factories that produce without differentiation.

The scale of what is at stake becomes clear when we consider the numbers: Brazil holds the position of the 3rd largest textile industry in the world, sustaining 1.5 million direct jobs across its textile chain and generating USD 45 billion in sector revenue in 2024 alone . A country with this industrial weight cannot afford to let the divide between technical and creative disciplines persist unchallenged.

2. THE HISTORICAL DICHOTOMY

Snow (1959), in his lecture ‘The Two Cultures’, identified the chasm between scientific and humanistic thinking as one of the greatest intellectual problems of the 20th century . Decades later, the fashion sector still faces its own version of this chasm — with measurable economic and social costs.

4. DISCIPLINARY INTEGRATION MODEL

The integration of product engineering and fashion design requires a structural approach that unites creative intent with manufacturing reality. This convergence is built on shared principles:

1.Material Feasibility: Understanding fiber chemistry and textile mechanics as fundamental constraints of the design process, rather than afterthoughts .

2.Process Scalability: Designing products with the manufacturing sequence in mind, ensuring that the transition from prototype to mass production does not compromise quality .

3.Iterative Prototyping: Applying engineering design methods to physical garments, where each sample serves to test specific structural and aesthetic hypotheses .

5. IMPLICATIONS FOR TRAINING AND BRAZILIAN COMPETITIVENESS

Brazil has a specific opportunity in this context: one of the largest and most complete textile chains in the world, culturally rich creative capacity, and a tradition of solid technical training . What is missing is the institutionalization of this convergence — training programs that deliberately combine both dimensions.

The experience of ACRONOS — a brand founded by a production engineer with training in apparel design — offers a relevant case study: the combination allowed for the construction of a brand with sophisticated cultural identity and rigorous operational processes, accessing markets that purely creative or purely technical brands would struggle to reach.

6. CONCLUSION

The convergence between product engineering and fashion design is not an academic curiosity — it is a growing competitive necessity in a market that demands both impeccable technical quality and deep cultural relevance simultaneously. Brazil, with its unique combination of textile capacity and cultural creative wealth, has all the ingredients to be a global leader in this convergence. What is missing is recognizing it as a strategic advantage — and investing in its institutionalization.
