🌙 The Moon’s Story of the Saints, in the Name of Vitthala
The story begins not on the earth, but in the sky. For when the great saints of Maharashtra took birth and when they departed, the heavens themselves shifted in rhythm — the moon a witness, the seasons a script, and Vitthala, beloved Lord of Pandharpur, the eternal director of this play.
🌔 When the Saints Were Born
Each entry into the world came not in darkness, but in growing light.
Jñāneśwar Māuli appeared beneath the waxing gibbous of Āṣāḍha, when monsoon clouds swelled, and the land thirsted for both water and wisdom. The child’s birth was not an accident of the calendar — it was a promise that light would deepen, that a voice would one day speak of oneness in the tongue of the people.
Sant Nāmdev arrived in the bright spring month of Chaitra, with a moon so round it seemed ready to sing with him. The Milky Way opened early in those nights, as if the universe knew that this boy’s bhajans would soon fill pilgrim routes and echo in temple courtyards.
Sant Eknāth was born under the tender crescent of Phālguna, when cold air still lingered, yet colors of Holi threatened to burst. The moon was young, no more than a curved smile — just enough to remind the world that even a sliver can carry the fullness of faith.
And then Tukārām Mahārāj, fragile child of Vaiśākha, came into a blazing summer when the moon was but a sliver, a thin hymn written on the night’s parchment. It was from such near-invisible beginnings that the fiercest voice of abhang took shape — proof that greatness does not need fullness at birth, only devotion.
🌘 When the Saints Departed
But every arrival turns, and the light must eventually retreat. Here too, the heavens choreographed their descent.
Jñāneśwar Māuli chose to disappear on Kārtika Ekādaśī, that sacred day when pilgrims collapse at Pandharpur’s steps, their voices hoarse from singing “Vithoba, Vithoba.” The moon was nearly round that night, glowing in approval as the saint dissolved into samadhi.
Sant Nāmdev, too, bowed out on an Ekādaśī, in the dry crispness of Māgha. His bhajans had already become northern winds — carried to Punjab, scattered to distant soils — but that winter moon, half-bright and firm, stood guard as his earthly voice withdrew.
Sant Eknāth, the ever-disciplined, waited for Mahāśivarātri’s night of vigils. The crescent waned toward darkness, yet the night was full of lamps, chants, and sacred fires. What better moment for one who wrote of both Rama and Krishna, than to dissolve in a night where gods walk between stars?
And then Tukārām Mahārāj— fiery, fearless — departed in Phālguna’s Krishna Trayodaśī. The moon was thin, paling fast, but the air that night was crystal, carrying sound like a temple bell. Into that high clarity, Tukā’s body vanished by the river, but his abhangs poured onwards, making the absence itself shine.

✨ The Bridge Between Ascent and Release
The waxing births, the waning departures — this is no coincidence, beloved Vitthala.
For what is life but a rising moon? What is death but its gentle setting? To be born is to promise one’s radiance. To die is to return one’s radiance back to the source.
The saints lived as moons orbiting your presence: sometimes near, sometimes hidden, but always luminous. Their patterns across the sky tell us that holiness is not random — it is a bridge, an arc of light across the dark.
🙏🏽 In the Name of Vitthala
O Vitthala, Panduranga, eternal on the brick — We too walk under these waxing and waning skies. Grant us the patience of crescents, the strength of fullness, and the humility of waning.
So that when we vanish, our voices — like theirs — rise still higher, bridging earth and heaven in your divine name.
Vitthala, Vitthala, Vitthala
