From Classrooms to Communities: My First Week of Recess 2026 Workshop Practice

Introduction

The first week of the Recess 2026 Workshop Practice at Uganda Christian University was both exciting and eye-opening. It was more than just attending sessions and learning technical tools. The experience combined technology, collaboration, research, innovation, and real-world community engagement.

Throughout the week, we were introduced to professional tools, academic research platforms, software development practices, and problem-solving approaches that connect technology to real societal challenges.

This first week helped me understand that technology is not only about coding and systems development, but also about understanding people, identifying real problems, and creating meaningful solutions.

Orientation and Digital Collaboration Tools

The week began with orientation sessions where we were introduced to the structure and objectives of the workshop practice.

We explored several collaboration and productivity platforms including:

• Slack
• Overleaf
• Google Drive
• Canvas

These tools are essential in modern academic and professional environments because they improve communication, teamwork, documentation, and project coordination.

One of the tools that stood out to me was Overleaf, which uses LaTeX for professional document preparation. At first, LaTeX looked complicated, but I quickly realized how powerful it is for creating clean and well-structured technical reports.

Academic Research and Professional Documentation

Another major part of the week focused on academic research and digital learning resources.

We were introduced to several academic databases including:

• ACM Digital Library
• IEEE Xplore
• JSTOR
• EBSCOhost
• Taylor & Francis

These platforms provide access to research papers, journals, and scholarly materials that are useful in academic and professional research.

We also learned how to use:

• Turnitin for plagiarism checking
• Mendeley for citations and reference management

This session emphasized the importance of academic integrity, proper referencing, and evidence-based research.

As a computer science student, I found this particularly important because strong technical solutions require strong research foundations.

Identifying Real Problems Through Community Engagement

One of the most impactful experiences during the week was moving beyond classroom discussions and interacting with the community.

Our team focused on maternal healthcare challenges in Mukono. Instead of simply assuming what the problems were, we conducted interviews and interacted with mothers and community members to better understand their experiences and challenges.

Listening to real stories and concerns changed my perspective completely.

We learned that some mothers face challenges such as:

• Delayed access to healthcare information
• Limited communication with healthcare providers
• Difficulty tracking maternal health conditions
• Lack of timely reminders and monitoring

These interactions made the project feel real and meaningful because we were no longer just discussing theoretical ideas. We were now thinking about how technology could directly improve people’s lives.

This experience taught me that good software solutions begin with understanding the users and the actual problems they face.

Brainstorming a Smart Maternal Health Monitoring System

After conducting interviews and discussions, our team began brainstorming a possible solution.

We started conceptualizing a Smart Maternal Health Monitoring System designed to improve communication, monitoring, and support for expectant mothers.

The project involved:

• Problem analysis
• SDG alignment
• System architecture planning
• Technical documentation
• Team collaboration

Working on this project helped me appreciate how software engineering can be applied to healthcare and community development.

It also demonstrated the importance of innovation that is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

GitHub, AI Tools, and Cybersecurity

Later in the week, we attended sessions involving GitHub and GitHub Copilot.

We learned about:

• Version control
• Repository management
• Collaboration workflows
• AI-assisted coding
• Software development practices

The introduction to GitHub Copilot was especially interesting because it showed how artificial intelligence can assist developers during coding and software development.

In the afternoon, I participated in the cybersecurity chapter activities where we received an introductory session on cybersecurity.

The session covered:

• Digital security awareness
• Ethical hacking concepts
• Cybersecurity career paths
• Importance of protecting digital systems

This sparked my interest in learning more about cybersecurity and understanding how security plays a major role in modern computing.

Skills and Lessons Gained

By the end of the week, I had developed and improved several important skills including:

• Technical report writing using LaTeX
• Academic referencing
• Problem-solving
• Community engagement
• Software solution planning
• Basic cybersecurity awareness

More importantly, I learned that technology becomes truly impactful when it is used to solve real human problems.

The first week of the Recess 2026 Workshop Practice was productive, educational, and inspiring.

From learning new digital tools to interacting with communities and brainstorming solutions to healthcare challenges, the experience expanded both my technical understanding and my perspective on how technology can create positive change.

I am looking forward to learning more, building more practical solutions, and continuing to grow both technically and professionally throughout the remaining weeks of the workshop practice.

Technology is most powerful when it improves lives, and this week was a reminder of exactly that.
