📝 Mastering Plurals in English: A Fun Guide for ESL Learners

Have you ever wondered why we say boxes instead of boxs, or mice instead of mouses? Welcome to the wonderful world of plurals — where one becomes many!

English has many rules for changing a word from singular (one thing) to plural (more than one). Let’s explore them together using a fun and colorful chart!

🌟 1. Most Nouns: Just Add “s”

This is the simplest rule. For most words, you just add -s to make them plural:

• apple → apples
• boy → boys
• cat → cats

🌟 2. Nouns Ending in s, x, h, or sh: Add “es”

If a word ends with s, x, sh, or ch, we add -es:

• brush → brushes
• box → boxes
• bus → buses

🌟 3. Nouns Ending in a Consonant + y: Change “y” to “ies”

If the word ends in a consonant and y, change the y to i and add -es:

• fly → flies
• city → cities

🌟 4. Nouns Ending in a Vowel + y: Just Add “s”

If there’s a vowel before the y, we just add -s (not shown in the chart, but important!):

• toy → toys
• day → days
