7 Hidden Places in Uttarakhand That No Travel Guide Will Tell You About
When most people think of Uttarakhand, the first names that come to mind are Mussoorie, Nainital, and Haridwar. And honestly, I don’t blame them — these are beautiful places. But if you’ve been to these spots, you already know what I mean when I say the crowds can take away a lot of the magic.
I’m from Lucknow, and the first time I visited Uttarakhand, I did the usual tourist circuit. But on my second trip, I sat down with some locals over chai and asked them — “Where do YOU go when you want peace?” What they told me changed everything.
Here are 7 hidden gems of Uttarakhand that are truly off the beaten path.

- 🌿 Munsiyari — The Mini Kashmir You’ve Never Heard Of
Tucked away in the Pithoragarh district, Munsiyari is the kind of place that makes you want to quit your job and never leave. The views of the Panchachuli Peaks from here are absolutely breathtaking — five snow-capped summits reflected in crystal-clear air. There are no big hotels, no tourist buses, no selfie crowds. Just mountains, pine forests, and silence.
Best Time to Visit: April to June, September to November
Distance from Lucknow: ~480 km via Haldwani
Must Do: Visit Birthi Falls, attempt the Khaliya Top Trek
Local Tip: Try “Bhatt ki Churkani” at any local dhaba — a traditional Kumaoni dish you simply cannot find anywhere else in India.

- 🏔️ Chopta — Uttarakhand’s Best Kept Secret
Called the “Mini Switzerland of India” by those who have been here, Chopta is a small meadow village that sits at an altitude of around 2,680 meters. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple — the world’s highest Shiva temple — and then up to Chandrashila Peak is one of the most rewarding treks in the entire Himalayas.
Best Time to Visit: March to June, October to November
Distance from Lucknow: ~440 km
Must Do: Tungnath-Chandrashila Trek (suitable for beginners)
Hidden Tip: Stay overnight and do some stargazing. With zero light pollution, the night sky here looks like something out of a NASA photograph.

- 🌊 Kanatal — Peace and Quiet Just 38 km from Mussoorie
Kanatal is one of those places that feels like a well-kept family secret. Located just 38 km from Mussoorie but a world away from its crowds, Kanatal has apple orchards, dense forests, and stunning views of the Tehri Lake. It’s perfect for a weekend escape from Lucknow without the chaos of popular hill stations.
Best Time to Visit: October to June
Must Do: Camping, nature walks, Kodia Jungle Trek
Hidden Tip: Head to Tehri Dam for a boat ride at sunset — the view of the golden water against the hills is something you’ll keep coming back to in your memory.

- 🦅 Pangot — A Birdwatcher’s Paradise Near Nainital
Just 15 km from Nainital but rarely visited by tourists, Pangot is home to over 580 species of birds. If you love wildlife photography or simply want a peaceful spot without tourist noise, Pangot is your answer. The forest trails here are serene and the air is clean enough to make you feel 10 years younger.
Best Time to Visit: November to April
Must Do: Bird watching, nature trails through oak and rhododendron forests
Hidden Tip: Stay in a homestay — local families here are incredibly warm and the home-cooked food is simple, fresh, and delicious.

- 🌸 Dhanaulti — The Snowfall Spot Tourists Haven’t Discovered Yet
Sitting at 2,286 meters, Dhanaulti receives snowfall in winter but sees far fewer tourists than Mussoorie or Nainital. The Eco Park here, surrounded by towering deodar and oak trees, is perfect for a slow walk. The Surkanda Devi Temple nearby offers panoramic Himalayan views that are truly worth the climb.
Best Time to Visit: December to February for snow, March to April for wildflowers
Hidden Tip: You can easily do a day trip to Dhanaulti from Mussoorie by negotiating a taxi — the extra distance is small but the difference in crowd levels is massive.

- 🏞️ Lansdowne — A Hill Station Frozen in Time
Lansdowne is a cantonment town that still feels like it’s stuck in the British era — and that’s exactly what makes it special. There are no loud nightclubs, no tourist buses honking — just shaded walking paths, old churches, and a cup of tea with a mountain view. It’s the headquarters of the Garhwal Rifles regiment and feels like a dignified, quiet retreat.
Best Time to Visit: October to June
Distance from Lucknow: ~370 km
Must Do: Bhim Pakora (natural rock balancing), Tip ’n’ Top viewpoint, St. Mary’s Church

- 🌙 Kausani — Mahatma Gandhi’s Favourite Hill Station
Mahatma Gandhi once called Kausani the “Switzerland of India,” and standing there watching the Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli peaks at sunrise, you understand exactly why. The Anasakti Ashram, where Gandhi stayed, is still open to visitors and carries a deeply peaceful energy.
Best Time to Visit: March to June, September to November
Hidden Tip: The route through Baijnath and Bageshwar is incredibly scenic — don’t rush the drive, stop and enjoy it.
