Birthday Illusions

The candles flicker on the cake, Confetti falls, balloons drift low. The cheering, laughing keeps me awake, As voices rise and overflow.

They gather round the celebrant, So dressed, so bright, so elegant — Yet something here I can’t ignore: That time moves on, and asks no more.

It passes quicker than we know. We sing and laugh, as if it’s slow. Blow out the candles, make a wish… And watch another moment go.
