The Epistemeism Manifesto (Additional)

Epistemeism holds that the pursuit of knowledge is not one human activity among others but the telos that orders all the rest — the axis around which labor, love, suffering, and community arrange themselves into something worth calling a life. Where the Cartesian tradition isolated the knowing subject in a room of mirrors, and where much of the Western canon treated wisdom as a private achievement of solitary genius, Epistemeism insists that knowing is irreducibly relational: the self comes to truth only through and with others, in the manner Ubuntu names when it says a person is a person through other persons. This is not knowledge as accumulation but knowledge as becoming — Bildung fused with Sawubona, the Socratic elenchus rewritten in a register that has survived colonization rather than authored it. To know, on this account, is to be answerable: answerable to the conditions that distorted whose knowledge counted as knowledge in the first place, answerable to Biko’s insistence that the mind decolonized is the precondition for any liberation worth the name, answerable to Fanon’s wound and to the wisdom that wound makes legible. Epistemeism does not ask whether you have true beliefs. It asks what kind of person your relationship to truth is making you, and whether that person could survive contact with another consciousness without flinching.
