Azure AI Search Goes Serverless….

One of the most interesting additions to Azure AI Search is the introduction of the Serverless tier (currently in preview), making it easier than ever to get started with AI-powered search without worrying about capacity planning upfront.

The preview is currently only available in West Central US, Switzerland North, and Japan East.

For years, Azure AI Search has offered dedicated pricing tiers such as:

🔹 Basic

🔹 Standard (S1, S2, S3)

🔹 Storage Optimized (L1, L2)

These tiers require provisioning search units (replicas and partitions), which is great for predictable production workloads but can be costly for development, experimentation, and low-traffic applications.

With the Serverless tier:

✅ No capacity planning required

✅ No need to manage replicas and partitions

✅ Pay based on actual usage

However, one of the biggest limitations of Azure AI Search Serverless today is that it is not intended for enterprise-grade networking scenarios. Features such as Shared Private Link are currently not available in the Serverless tier.

Organizations requiring private connectivity to services such as Azure OpenAI, Storage Accounts, Cosmos DB, or other protected resources should continue to use a dedicated Search service (Basic or higher). Shared Private Link remains a premium capability available in dedicated Azure AI Search tiers such as Standard and Storage Optimized.

While Serverless does not support Shared Private Link, it does support Private Endpoints, which is still useful for securing inbound access to the search service.

Serverless is still a good option for applications with data that are not critical.

It would be great to see Shared Private Link support make its way into Serverless in the future Microsoft
