The story starts with the sad phase: a little girl with her careless father tries to survive, but just existing isn’t her style. She wants more from her life, and at a very young age, she understands that her beauty can make a difference in her situation.

The protagonist, Evelyn Hugo, whose birth name is Evelyn Elena Herrera, came to Hollywood with Ernie Diaz, her first husband.

What follows is the rise of a woman who refuses to let life happen to her. Evelyn is ambitious, calculated, and unapologetically determined to become a star. Along the way, she marries seven husbands, makes choices that will leave you questioning her morals, and sacrifices things that many people would never trade for success. But the greatest love of her life was someone else entirely, someone no one would ever expect.

But this book is much more than Hollywood glamour, fame, and scandal.

Behind the headlines is a woman carrying secrets, regrets, and a love story that shaped her entire life. The deeper you get into Evelyn’s story, the more you realize that every decision she made came with a price. Sometimes you’ll admire her, sometimes you’ll be frustrated with her, and sometimes your heart will break for her.

One of my favorite things about this book is that it never asks you to see Evelyn as a hero or a villain. It simply presents her as human flawed, complicated, selfish, loving, brave, and vulnerable all at once.

By the end, I wasn’t turning pages to find out who her seventh husband was. I was reading to understand the woman behind the name “Evelyn Hugo.”

And when the final pieces fall into place, the story leaves you with that rare feeling every great book creates the sense that you’ve known someone intimately, only to realize you have to say goodbye.
