Bringing Augmented Reality to Everyone: Meet Attina, the $47 AR Headset

Co-authors : Rajshekar Reddy, Santhosh Kumar, and Ramesh Makam

This post summarizes a research paper on Attina, a low-cost, accessible Augmented Reality (AR) headset designed to facilitate inclusive learning environments. This paper has been accepted for publication in the Adjunct Proceedings of the 2023 ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing & the 2023 ACM International Symposium on Wearable Computing. The team will be presenting their work at the UbiComp / ISWC 2023 conference at Cancún, Mexico.

A Revolution for Education and Beyond

In a world where AR technology continues to break new ground, there is an unfortunate reality: its hefty price tag. The impressive devices on the market, such as Microsoft’s Hololens 2 and Magic Leap 2, are priced well into the thousands. This means that, in developing countries and low-income areas, AR remains a distant dream. But all of that could be about to change. Meet Attina, the low-cost, DIY, open-source AR headset that aims to make this groundbreaking technology accessible to all.

Breaking Down Barriers with Attina

Developed by Team Intellivision, as a part of the Global Surgical Training Challenge, Attina was designed to be a solution for the costly issue of widespread access to quality surgical training in resource-constrained settings. With a price tag of just $47, it’s a significant leap toward democratizing AR. The brilliance of Attina lies in its simplicity: it utilizes a smartphone as its display, 3D-printed parts for its body, and a simple combiner to overlay virtual content on the user’s field of vision.

How Does It Work?

Attina’s 3D-printed enclosure, beam-splitting combiner, and smartphone integration all combine to create a seamless AR experience. It features a stereoscopic rendering approach that simulates human vision, making virtual content feel more immersive and real. The headset design is ergonomic, with adjustable straps and cushioning for comfort during prolonged use. Plus, Attina comes with a 3-DoF (Degrees of Freedom) controller, allowing users to interact with the virtual content they’re seeing. This interaction is essential for a broad range of applications, from education to gaming and professional training.

Empowering Education

The use of AR in education has been shown to significantly improve memory retention and engagement in students. Imagine a history lesson where students can virtually explore ancient civilizations or a science class where complex ecosystems come to life right before their eyes. Attina could unlock this kind of immersive learning for students everywhere, regardless of their school’s budget.

Open Source and Community-Driven

The team behind Attina isn’t just keeping this technology to themselves. We’ve open-sourced the entire project, encouraging a collaborative approach to development. This means that anyone, from tech enthusiasts to professional engineers, can contribute to the project, making improvements and customizations to help the headset reach its full potential. The GitHub repository includes comprehensive documentation that covers everything from the bill of materials and 3D printing files to the assembly instructions and software.

The Future of Attina

While Attina is a leap forward in accessibility, it is still a work in progress. The team acknowledges a few limitations, such as distortion in the peripheral vision and brightness constraints due to the smartphone’s display. They are actively working on improvements and encourage the global community to contribute as well!

As AR technology continues to evolve, projects like Attina are essential. They challenge the status quo and push us towards a future where cutting-edge technology can be in the hands of everyone, not just those who can afford it.
