I’ve been so busy that I completely forgot about this challenge. I noticed just in time, finishing it with a few hours to spare. Forgive me if it looks rushed…

33 — Some Like it Hot — like the movie, or not

I’ve seen the movie. It was a long time ago, but I do remember that I liked it and that it was about men dressing up as women — it’s not because of that that I liked it, just so you know. It was a delightful comedy.

I remembered there was a drag show at the annual summer event in our city center, many years ago, and I had taken photos there, so now I just had to find them.

Main street was closed for traffic for the weekend and all shops had stalls outside. There were all kinds of activities and performances on the two squares, one at the beginning of the street, the other at the end.

The drag show was just one of many performances that day. It was a bit sad, with a foot-high catwalk-like stage in the middle of the square, and the sparse audience sitting at a distance comfortable enough not to actually be part of it — the whole drag-thing was not particularly part of the local scene and hardly anyone was familiar with it.

The queens sure did their best and probably deserved better. They did a lip-sync show, which probably is what they usually do — it was my first and only drag show to witness too.

There were billboards all around the square, making it impossible to get decent, uncluttered photos. I did not own a “fast” lens at the time, so I blurred the background in Photoshop — photographers will probably notice it wasn’t done in-camera.

34 — The Tourist — go ahead, play detective

I’m not entirely sure what the prompt means. I’m not the detective kind, though I like to take photos that may encourage viewers to investigate. If you’ve seen my images, you’ll know I have a preference for close-ups and abstraction, pulling details out of context. My challenge is to do it in a way that will still allow identification without giving away more than I need to. This photo is no exception; it’s obvious what it is, but not where — it’s up to the viewer to find out.

This photo is part of a series I made for an art project in Galicia, Spain. When doing our workaway there, we got to partake in a group project that will ultimately lead to an exhibition and a book. That was planned for this year, but has been postponed until next; that’s also when we’ll return to that workaway.

35 — Nightshift — like the song, or not

I come from a community close to Antwerp. When I was young, “going to the city” meant Antwerp, as if there were no other cities. As a teen I’d take the tram, which was cheap and easy, especially when going out at night.

Trams and their infrastructure need maintenance too, and that’s being done after hours, by the nightshift crew, after the last tram has done its round, usually sometime after midnight.

36 — Complicated — like the song, or not

This one is somewhat related to the previous photo. We now live by the North Sea, and there’s a tram here too, connecting all the towns and cities along the Belgian coast.

Contrary to some countries where the tram gets its power from a third rail, the power lines are overhead here. The infrastructure is a lot more complicated, but safer. With multiple tracks crossing, the view of the sky can get really messy.

I used this photo a few times before. It’s one of my **Middelkerke Abstract** series. Contrast and levels are pushed so high that the result is pure black and white, almost like a pen drawing.
