A prayer for joy that can stand beside sorrow

“Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble.” — Psalm 90:15 (NIV)
Lord, meet the measure of my sorrow with the measure of Your joy.
I do not ask for joy that has never known grief.
Give me the kind that can sit beside sorrow and still carry its light.
You know the years I could not lift from the floor.
You know defeat by name.
You know the rooms I closed, the breath that kept going, the hope that stayed alive under ash.
I am not asking You to erase the past.
I am asking You to walk into it with mercy.
Walk into what I cannot mend.
Do not let regret keep the key.
Where sorrow counted the years, teach joy to answer deeper.
Where grief narrowed my life, widen my soul again.
And if healing begins with one softer breath, let me receive even that as grace.
Make me glad, O Lord, with a joy deep enough to tell the truth about sorrow and still rise.
When I look back on what I cannot reclaim, show me more than absence.
Show me where You remained, what mercy kept, and what love was preparing beneath the ash.
Lord, meet the measure of sorrow with the measure of joy,
not because nothing was lost but because nothing lost is beyond Your keeping.
Amen.
