The Conference for Truth and Trust Online wrapped up its fourth annual event last month, fully hybrid with remote speakers and audience participation and a 2-day event in Boston at Boston University.

The TTO conerence is a collaboration of academics and industry experts on two crucial industry and scholarship fields: truthfulness and reliability of online information systems and trust online. Several AI engineers from Meta, Microsoft, Google originally founded the event in London in 2019 as a meetup between academia, product and policy teams at platforms and civic-minded organizations.

Several members of our community contributed to Truth and Trust Online 2022, such as Clara Tsao, co-founder of the Filecoin Foundation and the Trust and Safety Professional Association; Jennifer Mathieu, Chief Technology Officer at Graphika; Gianluca Strighini and Eni Mustafaraj, conference program Co-Chairs and Assistant Professors at Wellesley College and Boston University; Justin Davis, CEO of Spectrum Labs; Ace Wang; Keenan Jones; and Nevin Thompson, Communications Specialist and Community Lead at the Credibility Coalition. Truth and Trust Online is managed and produced by credibility events specialist Ahmed Medien.

More than 200 people joined the conference online and in-person in Boston for a three-day program that boasted:

• Panel discussions
• New grant opportunities in the credibility space

TTO 2022 Program

The conference program focused this year, like its three preceding years, on content moderation and content algorithmic content ranking, platform transparency governance and safety measures and additional topics such as uncovering misinformation supersedes, the interaction of misinformation of gender, gender expression online and new fringe sex-driven online subcultures and movements.

A highlight of TTO 2022 was the keynote on Day 1: #Hashtag Activism Networks of Race and Gender Justice, presented by Sarah J. Jackson (University of Pennsylvania), Moya Bailey (Northwestern University), and Brooke Foucault Welles (Northeastern University).

Truth and Trust Online in 2023

Truth and Trust Online will return in 2023 for a new edition and with renewed focus on the intricacies of the online information ecosystem. We will focus next year on new mixed-reality environments (the metaverse), creator platforms and new intersectional research covering new online subcultures such as young adults and gender expression online.
