Calvin Coolidge on Persistance
Calvin Coolidge on Persistance
Calvin Coolidge once said, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence… Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” Growing up, this quote was practically a family motto. Anytime I wanted to quit something, my dad would remind me of it, and now as an adult I still hear it, though the full speech has been shortened in my mind to a quick reminder: “Calvin Coolidge on persistence.”
It shows up whenever I hit a wall, after a failure, after a “no,” when I’m tired or overwhelmed, or when I’m convinced I can’t do one more thing and I run out of the why. The thing I’ve learned over time is that persistence works a lot like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. What once felt like failure starts to look more like a misstep or a moment you simply haven’t learned from yet.
But persistence isn’t just pushing forward without stopping; it also includes the pause. Before I get back up, I take a moment to process what happened. I ask myself what actually went wrong, how it made me feel, whether it was pressure, lack of preparation, or something completely outside my control. I ask whether I still genuinely want the thing I was chasing. Writing it out helps, it turns emotions and worries into something I can actually see and understand rather than letting them swirl around in my head.
After that reflection comes the rest. It doesn’t have to be long. It’s like letting your mind digest the experience, the same way as a child you were told to wait a bit after eating before jumping in the pool. That pause becomes its own source of momentum. It’s what gives me clarity and energy to decide my next step.
Then comes the moment when you stand back up. That’s where persistence really live, in choosing to keep going. You plan your next move, you decide how you’re going to show up again, and you make it real by writing it down or saying it out loud. Persistence isn’t one dramatic comeback; it’s a series of quiet returns.
And over time, you begin to see how persistence connects to discipline. You won’t show up at 100% every day, no one does, but showing up at all matters. Showing up tired, uncertain, hopeful, discouraged, rested, inspired, it all counts. You learn to work with every version of yourself. And without noticing it, improvement arrives slowly and quietly. One day something that once felt heavy feels just a little lighter. One day you realize you’re stronger than you were before.
Persistence isn’t about never falling. It’s about learning the rhythm of rising, pause, breathe, plan, stand, repeat. And with every cycle, you become someone who keeps going, someone who presses on, someone who grows a little more resilient every time.
