Once in a Blue Moon…

There are two Full Moons in May this year. The first was on the 1st, in Scorpio, doing what Scorpio tends to do, bringing up feelings people had been doing a good job of avoiding. And now, at the very end of the month, a second one. That makes it a Blue Moon. It’s two Full Moons in one calendar month. Rare enough that we have a whole phrase for it, the one people use when they mean something almost never happens.
This Full Moon is in Sagittarius. Which is, honestly, a decent way to end a month that started quite sensibly.
May opened with a New Moon in Taurus, and if you remember how that week felt, it was probably a lot of sorting things out. Finances, cupboards, the thing you’d been putting off since March. All useful. But a certain flatness can settle in after a stretch of being very responsible. You’ve been eating plain food for a while. You hadn’t really noticed until now.
By the time the evenings start going on properly and you realise the year is almost half over, something tends to shift. Some people end up refreshing flight prices at 11pm for somewhere they’ve never seriously considered going, just because they need to feel like something is possible. For others, it’s more like a low-grade restlessness with the same coffee, the same walk, the same three topics of conversation with the same people. None of it is bad. It just starts to feel a bit airless.
A Sagittarius Full Moon can feel like you’ve been in the same room too long and need air. There’s a pull toward plans you can feel in your body before they make sense on paper. The kind where someone says what if we actually did that thing and this time you don’t immediately think of reasons not to. Or a conversation that comes from nowhere and makes a problem you’ve been sitting in for months look completely different. Or honestly just looking up from something and thinking: I haven’t thought about that in a while.
You don’t always decide against the bigger version of life. Sometimes you just stop looking at it. The same commute, the same week repeating, and gradually you stop thinking of yourself as someone who might do things differently. January’s ideas go quiet the way background noise does. You stop noticing.
The “once in a blue moon” phrase is obvious here, but it fits. A second Full Moon in the same month already makes the timing feel a little unusual, like the month has given you one more bright moment to look at things from a different angle. And because this one is in Sagittarius, that second look is less about tidying things up and more about widening the frame.
There can be something useful in that. A thought you shelved because it seemed impractical comes back with a bit more life in it. A plan you dismissed too quickly starts to feel worth considering again. Or you realise that what you called “being realistic” was partly just getting used to the same limits.
You may not act on any of it straight away. That’s fine. A Blue Moon doesn’t have to become a grand turning point to matter. Sometimes it simply brings back a question you weren’t finished with, and gives you enough space to hear it properly this time.
When to look up
31 May 2026. The Moon rises around sunset, low in the east.
This one’s a Micromoon, sitting a little further from Earth than usual, so it may look slightly smaller and cooler-toned than you’re expecting. Still full, still worth a few minutes outside.
Journal with me
What would you do differently if you stopped being so sensible?
What have you kept doing just because you started doing it?
When did you last feel like there was something good coming?
Thank you for being here.
