“Coffee Scrub?” Yeah, I Won’t Be Sleeping For A Week

Ever have one of those moments? You think you’re being all clever, all DIY-chic, and it backfires spectacularly? Well, buckle up. Let’s talk about caffeine, shall we? We all know it’s the magic elixir that gets us through Monday mornings. But what happens when you, in a fit of misguided brilliance, decide to bathe in it?

The Coffee Scrub Debacle

It started innocently enough. I was scrolling through some “natural beauty” blogs — don’t judge — and stumbled upon a recipe for a coffee scrub. The promises were enticing: smoother skin, reduced cellulite, the whole shebang. Being the adventurous type (or, more accurately, the easily influenced type), I decided to give it a whirl. The recipe called for used coffee grounds, olive oil, and a few drops of essential oil. Easy peasy, right? I mixed it all up, hopped in the shower, and proceeded to scrub myself from head to toe. It smelled amazing, like a gourmet coffee shop exploded in my bathroom. I felt virtuous, eco-friendly, and utterly convinced that I was about to emerge a goddess. Boy, was I wrong. Oh so wrong.

The Caffeine Overload

What I failed to consider — and this is where the TIFU part comes in — is that your skin absorbs things. Like, actually absorbs things. I had essentially created a caffeine patch the size of my entire body. The first sign that something was amiss was the jitters. I thought maybe it was just excitement about my impending goddess-like transformation. But then came the heart palpitations. Then the inability to focus. And finally, the full-blown, wide-awake, staring-at-the-ceiling-at-3 AM insomnia. It was like I’d mainlined a triple espresso. Except instead of a pleasant buzz, I felt like a hummingbird trapped in a paper bag. My thoughts were racing, my hands were shaking, and I was pretty sure I could hear colors.

The Research (That Should Have Happened Sooner)

In my caffeine-fueled frenzy, I did what any rational person would do: I Googled “can you absorb caffeine through your skin?” The answer, as you might have guessed, was a resounding YES. Apparently, caffeine readily penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream. And while a little caffeine absorption might be beneficial (some studies suggest it can reduce inflammation), bathing in the stuff is generally not recommended. I found articles about caffeine patches used for alertness, even weight loss (questionable, I know). And then I realized the sheer volume of coffee grounds I’d slathered all over myself. I had basically turned my shower into a giant, caffeinated science experiment.

The Aftermath

The insomnia lasted for two days. Two glorious, sleep-deprived days of staring at the ceiling, contemplating the meaning of life, and regretting my DIY beauty choices. I tried everything to counteract the effects: drinking water, eating bananas (for the potassium, I read somewhere), even attempting meditation (which mostly resulted in me twitching uncontrollably). Nothing worked. I was a caffeine-addled mess. Did my skin look amazing? Marginally. Was it worth the two days of insomnia? Absolutely not.

Lessons Learned

So, what’s the takeaway from all of this? A few things, actually:

  • DIY beauty is not always the answer. Sometimes, the professionals know what they’re doing for a reason.
  • Read the fine print. Or, you know, at least do a quick Google search before slathering yourself in anything.
  • Moderation is key. A little caffeine is great. A lot of caffeine is… well, a two-day insomnia party.
  • Listen to your body. If you start feeling like a hummingbird on crack, something is probably wrong. Will I ever try a coffee scrub again? Maybe. But next time, I’ll be sure to use decaf. And maybe wear a hazmat suit. Just in case. This whole experience really made me wonder: what other seemingly harmless things are we accidentally overdosing on through our skin? Think about it: lotions, soaps, even laundry detergents. Are we unknowingly absorbing a cocktail of chemicals that are slowly turning us into… well, something other than ourselves? It’s a slightly terrifying thought, isn’t it? Perhaps it’s time to start paying closer attention to the ingredients lists and questioning the things we put on our bodies, not just in them. Who knows what the long-term effects might be? Anyway, I’m off to try and catch up on some sleep. Wish me luck. And if you see me bouncing off the walls, just hand me a banana and back away slowly.

If you’d like to support my work, you can **buy me a coffee.**
