✅Growing up in Japan, I found a zen world full of nature, trees, and snakes.

My first memory is of seeing a snake in the park and wanting to touch it. Japan has a lot of water ways, and I recall seeing bridges rise up to let the boats go under while the cars waited.

My father trained in Karate and I loved Japanese food, especially noodles. I was in samurai heaven.Some thirty years later, I wondered about Japan, for I moved and live in California. However, sometimes I returned to Japan to train with masters of samurai arts. I visited dojos in Toyko to work out.

I grew up reading about Miyamoto Musashi and his Book of Five Rings. However, one sensei or teachers, told me to not believe in the myth of the greatest swordsman.His martial arts teachers taught him that Musashi was not honest and would jump his opponents the night before the match and kill them. He would report that he defeated another master.

The way of the Samurai remains about Honor. I have spent a life time teaching students in Korea and America. I love my students. I even taught a class on Samurai Cinema and Literature. I am Doc Samurai Sam. I have studied Kendo, Japanese Fencing for over 25 years. Next year, our club will go to Harvard to compete!

Tribute to Samurai Sam by Asad chishti

Here’s a tribute poem dedicated to my Medium friend Samurai Sam, celebrating the spirit of a writer, not just the face:

He writes like a blade drawn in silence, sharp yet gentle, cutting through noise to reveal the truth beneath.

Words follow him as shadows follow light disciplined, patient, each sentence trained like a warrior’s breath before the strike.

Samurai Sam does not shout on the page, he moves. With balance. With honor. With stories that bow before they rise.

His smile carries the calm of unfinished battles, his pen remembers what the heart dares not forget.

In a world crowded with loud ink, he writes with purpose a lone samurai in the digital age, guarding meaning, defending depth.

May his words never rust, may his silence always speak, and may every reader leave his page a little more awake.

A tribute to a writer who walks the way of words.
