The Strength We Discover During Difficult times

“Sometimes we don’t realize how strong we are until strength is the only choice we have.”

Most of us would never choose a difficult season.

We would not choose uncertainty, disappointment, setbacks, or challenges. We would prefer that life unfold according to our carefully made plans.

Yet if we live long enough, we eventually discover that difficult seasons are part of every meaningful life. Retirement brings transitions. Relationships experience challenges. Health concerns arise. Plans change. Life asks us to adapt in ways we never expected.

While these seasons are rarely easy, they often reveal something important: they reveal our strength.

I have recently experienced many of these challenges and setbacks myself. Looking back, I can see that difficult seasons have made me stronger, more resilient, and more focused on this next great chapter of my life. Along the way, I have learned a few lessons that I would like to share with you.

Strength Often Arrives Quietly

When people think of strength, they often imagine something dramatic. They picture courage that feels bold, fearless, and confident.

But the strength I have witnessed — and experienced most often — looks very different.

It looks like showing up one more day when you are tired.

It looks like taking the next step when you are unsure.

It looks like continuing to hope when the future feels uncertain.

It looks like choosing gratitude even when life is difficult.

It looks like supporting someone you love.

And it looks like believing there is still purpose ahead.

This kind of strength is often quiet, yet it is incredibly powerful.

We Learn What Matters Most

Difficult seasons have a way of clarifying our priorities.

The things that once seemed urgent often become less important, while the things that truly matter become clearer.

We become more grateful for meaningful relationships, good health, simple moments, faith, purpose, and time.

We begin to recognize that life’s greatest gifts are often the ones we once took for granted.

In many ways, difficult seasons help us reconnect with what matters most. They remind us to live with greater intention and appreciation. This reflection often brings renewed purpose, hope, and momentum to retirement.

Strength and Retirement

One of the reasons I am passionate about retirement coaching is because retirement itself requires strength.

Retirement is not simply a financial transition — it is an emotional transition.

It asks us to rethink who we are, how we spend our time, what brings us meaning, and how we want to contribute moving forward.

Many people enter retirement expecting freedom. What they do not always expect is the personal growth that accompanies this stage of life.

Retirement invites us to discover strengths we may not have needed before. It challenges us to create a life that reflects our values, our passions, and our purpose.

Growth Happens in Unexpected Ways

Some of life’s greatest growth comes from the seasons we would never have chosen.

Challenges can deepen our compassion. Difficult experiences can increase our resilience. Unexpected detours can help us discover new purpose.

In retirement, that renewed sense of purpose can bring a joy that is both healing and motivating.

I have also learned that healing seasons are not pauses in life — they are opportunities.

Opportunities to reflect.

Opportunities to grow.

Opportunities to deepen our gratitude.

Opportunities to become stronger than we ever imagined.

Over time, these experiences remind us just how capable we truly are.

A Gentle Reminder

If you are currently walking through a difficult season, I want to encourage you.

You may feel uncertain.

You may feel tired.

You may feel as though progress is happening more slowly than you would like.

But do not underestimate the strength you are building.

Every step matters.

Every day matters.

Every act of courage matters.

The strength you are developing today may become the foundation for a meaningful chapter that is still waiting to unfold.

Perhaps it is the very chapter that will become your next great chapter of retirement.
