A coronal mass ejection does not have to touch the ground to threaten modern infrastructure. It only has to move Earth’s magnetic field.

A solar storm moves toward Earth as the magnetosphere compresses and the power grid comes under stress, showing how space weather can become an infrastructure problem.

That movement can induce electrical currents through the ground, push those currents into long conductive systems, and create stress inside high-voltage transformers that were never designed to handle DC-like current. That is where space weather stops being an astronomy story and becomes an infrastructure story.

The question I pinned under the video is the one I keep coming back to:
If a Carrington-level solar storm was heading for Earth and officials had 18 hours of warning, what should they shut down first: the power grid, satellites, GPS, or nothing at all?
Every answer has consequences. Shutting systems down could protect infrastructure, but it could also create confusion, economic disruption, and public panic. Doing nothing might preserve normal life for a few more hours, but it could leave critical systems exposed at the exact moment they are most vulnerable.
That is the unsettling part of this kind of risk. The physics may be predictable, but the human response is not.
The Sun does not need intention to cause damage. It does not need malice. It only has to follow the physics.
And if the next major solar storm gives us hours instead of days, the hardest question may not be whether we see it coming.
It may be whether we know what to do first.
