Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced – The Caribbean Still Hits Different
by ACMEanubis
Naval fights that feel like proper piracy, and a few old ghosts that refuse to leave

That golden Caribbean light hits different in Resynced. I may have spent an embarrassing amount of time just sailing into it.
I went in expecting a prettier version of the same old ship. What I actually got feels like someone finally gave Black Flag the proper refit it deserved. It’s not a ground-up remake, but it’s also clearly more than a coat of paint. And honestly? Most of it works.
What lands clean
- Naval combat is still the best part and it’s got more bite now. New weapons, clearer feedback, actual choices in how you fight. I caught myself grinning like an idiot after chaining a ram into a boarding action that somehow didn’t end with me eating a cannonball. Same satisfying loop, just sharper.
- The world feels more alive under this lighting. Water actually catches the sun, storms carry weight, and sailing around no longer feels like ticking boxes. The new map helps a lot – way less icon spam yelling at you to go somewhere.

This is still the best naval combat in the entire series. No contest.
- Edward’s story keeps its roguish charm. The new scenes give a bit more weight without turning it into a slog.
Where it still stumbles
- Parkour is smoother in places but still has those classic “Edward’s boots have their own agenda” moments. You line something up perfectly and he decides to do a weird little dance instead. Better than before, but not gone.
- Land combat finally has some real weight thanks to the posture system. Enemies feel dangerous again. But the sword-only limitation is weird. No hidden blade in a normal fight, no picking up weapons off the ground. Edward would be personally disappointed in this choice.
- A few of the new cutscenes are stiff in a way that stands out. You can tell they weren’t motion-captured and it breaks the flow for a second.
- Stealth is easier now with the crouch button and you can just deal with tailing targets directly. That’s good. But it does quietly take away some of the old social stealth fantasy that made the series feel unique.

Still one of the most charming protagonists in the whole franchise.
Bottom line
Black Flag Resynced is the best way to experience this game in 2026. The naval fantasy is still unmatched, the world feels worth sailing across again, and combat on foot finally has some teeth. It’s not perfect – the parkour still fights you sometimes and a couple of systems feel half-finished – but the good parts are strong enough that you stop caring about the rough edges.
If you loved the original, this is an easy recommendation. If you’ve never played it, this is probably the version you should start with.
FINAL RATING: 8.7/10
Still the best pirate game going. Just don’t expect the rigging to always behave.
