I Stay Up Late Because It’s the Only Time I Feel Free.
And It’s Killing Me.
I have a dirty secret: I don’t go to bed when I’m tired. I go to bed when I’m exhausted, and even then, I scroll for another forty minutes.
It’s called revenge bedtime procrastination, and it’s the quiet rebellion of everyone who feels like their daytime hours don’t belong to them. We stay up late not because we’re not tired, but because the night is the only time no one is asking anything of us.
A 2025 study from the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that nearly 58% of adults under 40 regularly delay sleep to reclaim personal time, with the average “revenge” delay clocking in at 72 minutes per night .
Multiply that by a year, and you’ve lost eighteen full nights of sleep, to scrolling, streaming, and staring at ceilings.
The irony is cruel: the very hours we steal to feel free are the hours that make the next day harder, creating a cycle of exhaustion that demands even more stolen hours to cope.
I broke the cycle by doing something absurdly simple: I set a “phone bedtime” ninety minutes before my actual bedtime. The phone goes on the charger in another room. I read a paper book. I stretch. I stare at the wall. The first few nights, I lay awake furious. By night five, I was asleep before my old scrolling hour even began.
The revenge isn’t staying up late. The real revenge is waking up feeling like a human being.
