July Wears Bare Feet
Some months arrive with a schedule. July arrives barefoot, carrying sunlight in its hands.

Some seasons ask to be noticed. July simply walks into the light.
July never knocks.
It slips through the back gate,
bare feet dusted with warm earth,
the scent of cut grass following close behind,
laughing at clocks
and gently loosening the knots we tied around our days.
Before we notice,
the afternoon has stretched itself across the porch,
the sky has forgotten the meaning of hurry,
and even silence sounds sunlit.
Perhaps this is July’s oldest kindness—
not giving us more time,
only teaching time
how to breathe…
The trees stop reaching upward.
Instead,
they lean into the wind,
listening to stories older than rain.
The river keeps its own counsel,
carrying sunlight
like a secret
it was never meant to explain.
Clouds build small kingdoms,
then surrender them to the blue.
Evening lingers along the fields,
reluctant
to fold away another page of gold.
Children understand first.
They chase dragonflies
instead of hours.
Fill their pockets
with smooth stones,
white feathers,
and leaves
the color of laughter.
They return home
with scraped knees,
dust on their ankles,
sticky hands,
and stories too impossible
to be anything but true.
Adults arrive later.
We carry calendars into gardens,
deadlines to picnics,
questions into quiet places,
our hurried footsteps
across patient grass.
July never argues.
It simply waits—
like an old friend
who already knows
we will remember ourselves
eventually.
So the wind
untangles our thoughts.
Birdsong slips through the hedgerows,
asking nothing,
owing nothing.
The world
goes on blooming
without applause.
There is quiet courage
in things
that never hurry,
yet always arrive.
That is why
the happiest memories
never announce themselves.
They simply happen—
barefoot,
beneath an ordinary sky.
Soon,
the calendar
will turn another page
without asking the trees.
The fields
will keep the warmth
a little longer.
Somewhere,
a pair of forgotten footprints
will disappear
beneath the evening breeze,
yet the road
will remember
someone walked it
without rushing.
That is how July leaves—
not with farewell,
but with sunlight
still resting
on the windowsill,
and the quiet certainty
that for one beautiful month,
the world
remembered
how to walk
barefoot.
