Cardiff, who finished bottom of the Championship in the 24/25 season came back from behind and managed to beat Peterborough United by 2 goals to 1 at the Cardiff City Stadium. The visitors took the lead through a penalty in the 33rd minute. Cardiff City defender, and former Manchester United defender Will Fish first misplaced a pass, and later fouled Peterborough winger Declan Frith inside the penalty area. 21 year-old striker Bradley Ihionvien confidently finished from the penalty spot into the bottom left corner, and put “Posh” up in the tie. Cardiff kept attacking, and they looked like the better side for most of the game. The Welsh team had to wait for the equaliser all the way till the 48th minute, when Rubin Colwill struck the ball sweetly, right into the top right corner, from a free kick. The home team kept on attacking, and managed to find a goal, which was eventually a winner, through the 18 year-old right-back Ronan Kpakio, who smashed the ball in off the crossbar, after a smart pass into the box from Ollie Tanner.

Who were the main characters in Cardiff’s comeback?

When looking at how Cardiff came back from behind, we can not overlook the contribution of Rubin Colwill, the scorer of the equaliser for his team, but not only that, as he also created many opportunities for his team, with one of them being the chance for Cardiff’s winner. The Welsh midfielder, who was wearing the captain’s armband for the home side portrayed great leadership, and maturity throughout the game to help his team get back into the game. Let’s also not overlook the performance from Cardiff’s young goalkeeper Matthew Turner, who made a couple of inspirational saves in the last few minutes to help his team in getting all 3 points. It’s good to highlight that the 23 year-old keeper was making his Cardiff City debut today.

What went wrong for Peterborough?

Even though the visitors went a goal up, they couldn’t even get a point from this game. From the start Darren Ferguson’s side were quite sloppy with their passing at the back. They tried to build up from their goalkeeper, but most of the time struggled to enter the middle of the park with the ball. Especially, the 19 year-old left-back - Harley Mills had a poor game, as he struggled with his passing and going forward. The Peterborough defender also had a tough time defending agains Ollie Tanner who was a menace since the start of the game for the home side. Peterborough were worse statistically for most of the game. They created way less opportunities than their opponents, and when they managed to go 1 goal up, they focused on getting the 1:0 win over the line.

Rubin — fantastic, Joel — very poor

For the entirety of the game, but especially in the first half you could see the difference in quality on the day between the two Colwill brothers. The 23 year-old Rubin was the main man in his side’s comeback, as he got the equaliser, and was instrumental in Cardiff’s winner. While his brother was having a great game, Joel Colwill just couldn’t find his feet in today’s game. From the start of the game he was operating more to the right hand side of the midfield, and often making runs into the box. However, you could see he was finding it difficult to make a contribution, with many misplaced touches and getting dispossessed a couple of times.
