The Ghost Boat of the Jamuna River

On the waters of the Jamuna River, especially near the regions of Sirajganj and Tangail, a mysterious tale is often heard at night. During the peak of the monsoon, when the river turns murky and the current grows fierce, some say they glimpse a strange boat drifting by.

The story is old. There was once an unfortunate boatman named Rahim Miya. One monsoon night, while ferrying passengers across the river, his boat was caught in a violent storm. It sank, and Rahim Miya along with several passengers went missing. Their bodies were never found.

Since then, on stormy nights when the clouds rumble and the Jamuna’s waves rise wild, people claim to see a boat drifting silently on the river. It has no sail, no oars, yet it moves even against the current. Some have reported seeing faint shadows of people sitting quietly inside the boat. Their faces look sorrowful, and their eyes seem to glow even in the darkness.

Fishermen who come close to this ghostly boat often report strange experiences. Some lose their sense of direction, while others face sudden engine failures. One such story comes from Shahjahan, a fisherman from Sirajganj. One monsoon night, as he was fishing, a sudden storm threw him off course. Surrounded by darkness and crashing waves, he spotted a dim boat floating nearby—motionless despite the raging current.

Gathering courage, Shahjahan rowed toward it. As he approached, he saw a few people sitting silently inside. Their expressions were so deeply sorrowful that a chill ran down his spine. He wanted to speak, but no words came out of his mouth.

Suddenly, the boat seemed to vanish into a thick mist. Shahjahan stared in shock, then somehow managed to return to shore. The next morning, he shared his experience with the villagers. The elders told him about the ghost boat of the Jamuna. They said it carries the spirits of the drowned boatman and his passengers—souls that never found peace.

Even today, the people living by the Jamuna remain cautious while crossing the river on stormy nights. They believe that ghostly boat still wanders the river, and its silent presence brings an eerie sense of fear to the shores. The wild waves of the Jamuna and the darkness of the night echo the sighs of those lost souls.
