Let’s get into it.

You don’t need me to tell you that you have about 4,000+ photos of your dog or cat on your phone right now. Half of them are blurry. A solid chunk is just the butt because they turned around mid-shot. And somewhere in there is one decent photo of their face that’s probably already your lock screen.

HA! I can tell!

I’m not here to make you feel bad about that, it’s cute, actually, and the only difference between the phone photos of your pet and an actual portrait is who they are and why a professional pet photographer is the one who closes it. (And did I already mention it’s wall gallery worthy? Just checking.)

I know you’ve got tons of questions running in your head, and I’ll be totally honest here.

So, here are my top five reasons to hire one. Then I’ll tell you why I have the best job in the world, even if I’ve been completely clotheslined by a leash more times than I care to admit.

1. We Just Don’t Get Enough Time With Them: Dog Years and Cat Years

This is the heavy one, so I’ll keep it short (I’ll try to keep it short).

Our pets don’t get nearly enough time with us. Dog years, cat years, however you want to measure it, the math is never in our favor. That’s exactly why a portrait session isn’t just nice to have.

It’s a keepsake.

It’s also why senior and special-needs pet sessions matter so much to me. There’s a different kind of urgency when a pet is slowing down, and a different kind of care that goes into photographing them well.

Here’s one that sticks with me.

I remember meeting this very sweet couple, Sof and Amber, at the Denver Dog Fair, where they signed up for a photo session with their dog, Starburst. We’ll call him Burst.

Cute name, right?

So, I follow up with Sof later, and he mentions that Burst is actually going through some health issues and needs surgery. He suggests, hey, maybe we just take photos of our other dog, Kylo, instead?

And you know me, I was like, we’re not leaving anyone out. That’s like picking a favorite child for the family portrait! I told him we should just wait until Burst is completely healed up so we can get them both.

And that’s when he lets the cat out of the bag. Or, well, the Chihuahuas.

That’s when he drops the real news on me. It turns out, they don’t just have two dogs. They have four, yes, FOUR senior Chihuahuas! Pekka, Jacks, Kylo, and Burst, and yes, every single one of them was getting in the photos! We are not playing favorites.

I met all four of them.

We did an in-home session so everyone was comfortable and didn’t have to worry about travel. We set up a little studio in the corner of their living room, and those dogs showed up in sweaters and good moods and ate hot dog treats like the royalty they are.

When Sof and Amber finally saw the slideshow, Sof said, “I was crying the whole time.”

That’s one of the reasons why I keep a box of Kleenex in the presentation room. It comes in handy more often than you’d think. Senior and special needs pets are full of love and personality, and they deserve to be documented just as much as any other member of the family, and maybe more.

2. Who Does It Better? Phone Photography vs. Professional Pet Photography

What’s the difference between phone photography and professional pet photography?

It’s amazing what these tiny gadgets can do these days. You should absolutely keep using yours to snap those everyday candid moments!

Your phone is great, but there’s a real difference between a quick snap and years of figuring out lighting, timing, and posing on purpose. A professional pet photographer has spent actual years learning how to catch the exact split-second your cat decides you’re allowed to exist near her.

And how to command the room so your dog looks right at the lens on purpose. Your phone just can’t do that. Sorry, phone.

Your phone’s lucky shots aren’t even really lucky, and here’s the kicker.

Phones rely heavily on digital software to guess what an image should look like. The second your dog runs or your cat pounces, the phone’s shutter slows down to grab light, leaving you with a ghostly blur.

Professional action-tracking cameras like mine freeze time at 1/1000th of a second. It means I can capture every individual flying droplet of drool or kicked-up dirt in mid-air with razor-sharp clarity while they are at a full sprint.

Perfect treat throw action if you ask me.

Portability is great, but imagine the moment your pet decides to show off, but you have to get a close-up shot using your phone’s wide-angle lenses, so you have to shove the phone right into your pet’s face, which usually ruins the moment or makes them uncomfortable.

But when you compare that to my professional gear, I can stand 15 to 20 ft. away across the yard. Your pet completely forgets I’m even there and just acts like themselves. Plus, those big lenses naturally melt the background into that gorgeous, creamy blur (hello, beautiful bokeh!) that a phone’s portrait mode completely fakes by accidentally blurring out whiskers and ears.

But here’s the thing. A professional pet photographer brings something your phone just doesn’t have: decades of human expertise.

Knowing how to read a nervous dog before they bolt. Knowing the exact moment a cat is about to look at you and being ready for it. Knowing how light falls differently on a black cat versus a golden retriever and adjusting on the spot. Knowing when to slow everything down and when to move fast.

That’s not a camera setting. That’s years of figuring it out and doing it over and over until it’s second nature.

We are used to slobber! That’s kind of the whole point.

Most of the session is just play. Treats, zoomies, sniff breaks, and moments where your pet does something completely unhinged, and we both just start laughing. Your pet gets to be the whole entire point of the day.

Glad you asked. Because I used to be that person.

I used to be a family photographer. Before that, I dabbled in basically every genre photography offers because I loved all of it and genuinely could not pick a lane. Weddings, portraits, events, you name it.

The problem with loving everything is that you end up spread thin. Mediocre at a dozen things instead of excellent at one.

I got burnt out. Crispy. (Pun very much intended)

That crispy feeling is actually what saved me, because it forced me to stop and ask myself what my dream studio would actually look like. And the answer was out of my mouth before I even finished the thought.
