San Francisco can be an expensive city, but it doesn't have to be. Whether you are visiting or live here, it’s possible to enjoy the city frugally and even for free. Don’t let a tight budget keep you from getting out and exploring the City by the Bay.

1. de Young Tower, Golden Gate Park

The de Young Museum will let you come into the museum and bypass exhibits to visit their viewing tower. This multi-level structure offers views of the park and the Richmond District. You can even see the Golden Gate Bridge peaking out from the hills on clear days. Admission to the tower is free.

2. Blue Heron Lake

Take a stroll around a lake. Not too far from the de Young, you will find Blue Heron Lake (formerly Stow Lake). This manmade lake offers boat rentals and refreshments, but it’s free to walk around.

Enjoy the wildlife as you pass by ducks, geese, seagulls, butterflies, hawks, and sometimes even a blue heron.

3. Fisherman's Wharf

If you want to hit the tourist part of town, head to Fisherman's Wharf. While it can be a tourist trap, there are lots of things you can see for free. Take a walk along the wharf, enjoying the street performers, and snap pictures of Alcatraz and Coit Tower as you walk.

Make sure to stop by Pier 39 and go all the way to the back of the pier. You will find a group of sea lions lazing in the sun (or fog).

4. Sutro Ruins

If the coast is calling, visit the city's western edge and make a stop at Sutro Ruins. This was once the home of Sutro Baths, a popular poolhouse built in the late 1800s. Older generations of San Franciscans learned to swim at the baths, which were enclosed, giving people respite from the area’s windswept ocean shores.

In the late 60s, the baths caught fire, and eventually the area fell under the domain of the Golden Gate Recreation and Parks Department. Now, all that’s left are the ruins of what once was.

5. Ocean Beach

A walk down from the cliff where the Sutro Ruins sit will take you to Ocean Beach. A long and fairly wide beach. Locals frequent the beach, walking their dogs, jogging, taking a walk, or gathering with friends. It can be windy, so wear layers.

On sunny days, the beach is nearly perfect. Seagulls, surfers, lively graffiti, and impressively large ravens are regular sights. Try to find one of the many sand dollar shells that wash up on the beach.

It’s not advised to swim here; the riptide is severe, so stay safe on the shore and enjoy the natural beauty.

San Francisco has so much to offer for any budget. With endless places for photo ops, sightseeing, and exploring. Your adventure awaits!
