AI Ethics in Scholarly Publishing: A Scenario-Based Approach

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in academia and research, bringing forth several ethical considerations. These scenarios are particularly relevant for journal editors and peer reviewers, as they must navigate these issues in their decision-making processes.

I have attempted to list down some of the possible scenarios and their implications. I believe considering these issues in a structured way, can help us assess risks (and their extent) and devise suitable policies or solutions.

1. Undisclosed AI Use — Detected

Severe penalties, including work retraction and reputational damage, should be imposed for concealing AI use.

2. Undisclosed AI Use — Undetected

Develop mechanisms to detect undisclosed AI use, ensuring fairness and trust.

3. Partial AI Disclosure — Detected

Establish norms that encourage honesty in AI disclosure and facilitate informed review processes.

4. Partial AI Disclosure — Undetected

Needs to encourage complete transparency of AI usage in research methodologies.

5. Full AI Disclosure — No Issues

Important to clearly stipulate the extent of permissible AI use, promoting transparent integration of AI.

6. Full AI Disclosure — Wrongly Accused of Full AI Generation — Proved Innocence

Provide a fair mechanism for scholars to prove their significant contributions in the face of accusations.

7. Full AI Disclosure — Wrongly Accused of Full AI Generation — Couldn’t Prove Innocence

Determine fair repercussions for those unable to establish their input, thereby safeguarding the originality and value of scholarly work.

8. No AI Used — Falsely Accused — Couldn’t Prove Innocence

Include provisions for scholars to demonstrate the human origin of their work, protecting them from false accusations.

9. No AI Used — Falsely Accused — Proved Innocence

Provide a framework to clear scholars falsely accused of AI use, upholding their academic integrity.

10. No AI Used — No Accusations

Respect and preserve the traditional form of scholarly publishing, ensuring it remains free from AI involvement or accusations.

The journey towards an ethically sound and trustworthy scholarly landscape, with AI in the mix, is certainly challenging but worthwhile. As we continue to understand AI better and debate these issues, I’m sure we’ll find better ways to use AI in our work. With each step, I hope we keep getting closer to making the most of AI while keeping risks under control.
