Imagine you are sitting at a restaurant. You look at the menu, pick what you want, and tell the waiter. The waiter takes your order to the kitchen, the chef cooks the meal, and the waiter brings the fresh food back to your table.
In this scenario, you didn’t have to walk into the kitchen, find the ingredients, or turn on the stove yourself. The waiter acted as the middleman who took your request, delivered it to the system, and brought back the response.
In the digital world, that waiter has a name: API (Application Programming Interface).
What Exactly is an API? An API is a set of rules and protocols that allows different software applications to communicate with each other. It acts as a bridge, letting one system request data or functionality from another system without needing to know how that other system was built.
Whenever you use an app on your phone, send a message, or check the weather, you are interacting with APIs behind the scenes.
Everyday Examples You Already Use Logging In with Google or Facebook: When a website gives you the option to "Sign in with Google," it doesn't get access to your Google password. Instead, it uses Google’s API to ask: "Is this user who they claim to be?" Google verifies it and sends back a simple "Yes."
Online Payments: When you buy a product online and pay via credit card, PayPal, or Stripe, the shopping website doesn't handle your raw banking data. It sends the payment request to the payment gateway's API, which securely processes the transaction and reports back.
Weather Widgets: A simple website doesn't own weather satellites. It uses an API provided by a weather service to fetch live temperature and rain forecasts in real time.
Why APIs Changed the Internet Forever Before APIs became standard, building a complex software application meant building every single feature from scratch. If you wanted to build a ride-sharing app, you would have had to build your own digital map, your own SMS messaging system, and your own payment processor.
Today, developers can connect existing APIs like lego blocks:

Stripe API for handling payments.
