Fabric as Narrative
This project is a narrative-driven presentation inspired by Resonate, focused on communicating a clear message through storytelling and design. The goal was to explore how tailoring transforms clothing from something disposable into something meaningful — turning fabric into personal narrative. I created the presentation using Canva and structured it around the Resonate framework, building a five-part arc that moves the audience from problem to action.
The Problem
Clothing Without Intention
The presentation opens by confronting the reality of fast fashion: we buy, we wear, we replace. Most clothing is designed for mass appeal rather than individual identity. Trends change faster than we can build attachment to what we own, and clothing becomes disposable instead of meaningful. Consumption replaces connection.
The shift from consumption to creation changes everything.
This framing sets the stage for the audience to reconsider their relationship with clothing — not just as something functional, but as something that could carry personal meaning and tell a story about who they are.
The Solution
Tailoring as Storytelling
The presentation follows the Resonate storytelling structure, guiding the audience through five clear sections that build on each other. Each section moves the narrative forward — from identifying the problem to offering a mindset shift the audience can carry with them.
(1) Fast Fashion
Introduced the problem of clothing without intention — how mass production prioritizes trends over individual identity and turns garments into disposable commodities.
(2) Tailoring as Narrative
Presented the big idea: tailoring transforms fabric into story. When we tailor with intention, clothing becomes an extension of identity — not just an item we wear.
(3) Confidence
Explored how fit shapes perception — tailoring accentuates natural shape, improves posture, and builds confidence. Custom pieces carry memory, and intentional design builds pride.
(4) Sustainability
Connected tailoring to sustainability — extending garment lifecycles through alteration, reducing textile waste, and slowing consumption through intentional care.
(5) Tailor Your Life
Closed with a call to action: clothing can be disposable, or it can be narrative. Don’t consume your identity — construct it.
I also made intentional design choices that reinforced the message. The presentation uses a bold vermillion and cream color palette with large-scale typography, textured backgrounds, and editorial-style imagery. The diamond grid pattern running through the slides echoes the precision and craft of tailoring itself. Every visual choice was made to support the narrative rather than distract from it.
Challenges
Finding the Right Thread
One challenge was landing on a topic that felt personal enough to build a strong narrative around but broad enough to resonate with an audience. Tailoring connected to things I care about — style, identity, sustainability, and self-expression — which made the storytelling feel natural once I committed to it.
Balancing Message & Design
Another challenge was making the design feel editorial and intentional without overwhelming the content. I wanted the slides to feel like a fashion editorial — bold and visually striking — while still keeping the focus on the narrative arc from Resonate. Finding that balance between strong visuals and clear storytelling took multiple iterations, but the result feels cohesive.
I also had to think carefully about how to connect the personal (confidence, identity) with the systemic (fast fashion, sustainability) in a way that didn’t feel forced. The Resonate structure helped with that — moving from “what is” to “what could be” gave the presentation a natural rhythm.
Results
Reflection & Takeaways
Overall, I’m proud of how the presentation turned out. It communicates a clear message — that tailoring is more than altering clothes; it’s about taking authorship of how you present yourself to the world. The five-section structure kept the narrative focused, and the design choices reinforced the theme at every step.
Off-the-rack asks you to adapt. Tailoring adapts to you.
This project strengthened my understanding of how storytelling structure and design work together to move an audience. If I were to develop it further, I would add more data around fast fashion’s environmental impact and possibly include personal anecdotes or interviews to deepen the narrative even more.
