2 minutes to spot plastic prehistory in plain sight

You are probably holding a fossil right now.

Not “fossil” in the museum sense. Fossil in the casual, everyday sense.

The plastic casing of the device in your hands. The object carrying these words. The keyboard under my fingers. The screen through which your eyes are processing this sentence.

Processed fossil.

Ancient biomass, refined and remixed into modern convenience.

Which means, in a deeply strange way, we spend our entire lives touching the compressed, organic remains of long-dead life — and we call it “PLASTIC”

Your phone case? Jurassic-adjacent.

Your coffee cup lid? A prehistoric artifact… just with corporate branding.

(And now I’m wondering what the definition of “bioplastic” is, anyway. It Is prehistoric bio-matter. But it loses its “bio” status just because it forgot how to decay. Language can be weird!)

We know this, technically. But we don’t know-know it.

Plastic has become entirely invisible to us through sheer, numbing familiarity. The physical world stops being astonishing the exact second it becomes useful.

But every now and then, the veil slips. You look at a plastic spoon, and the cosmic joke hits you all at once:

We built the entire glittering infrastructure of modern human civilization out of ancient sunlight, captured by microscopic organisms that died millions of years ago.

You aren’t typing on a machine.

You are manipulating a ghost.

And then another thought arrives, slightly less poetic and a little more uncomfortable.

Nature spent millions of years making petroleum.

Heat… Pressure… Time… an unimaginable amount of time!

We turn it into a straw for a ten-minute drink. A takeaway spoon. A shopping bag. A wrapper torn open and discarded before the snack is even finished.

Geological patience, repurposed for convenience.

Millions of years to form. Minutes to use. Centuries to degrade.

Sometimes I think the strangest thing about plastic is not that it exists.

It is that we made something so astonishingly durable for things so spectacularly temporary.
