Eugene McCarthy spent 8 campaign days in Nebraska and repeatedly told voters and reporters that Nebraska was a high priority. Like Kennedy, he campaigned in the small towns in addition to the major urban areas. McCarthy falsely contended in his 1969 memoir of the campaign that he spent little time in Nebraska.
Some historians adopted McCarthy’s phony spin. Our exhaustive research corrected the historical record.
McCarthy falsely claimed that he did not spend much time in Nebraska because he wanted to spin away a bad loss. Kennedy defeated McCarthy 52% to 31% and won 20 out of the 28 delegates. Nebraska was Kennedy’s biggest win in 1968 and set him on the path to the Democratic nomination.
