Time and Consciousness

What does the Theory of Time in ERT reveal about the nature of time?

by Antonio Vaccarello

“What then is time? If no one asks me, I know;

if I want to explain it to a questioner, I do not know.”

Saint Augustine

There is a question the human mind recognizes as fundamental even before it can formulate it precisely. A question that has haunted us for millennia, that has occupied the greatest physicists, philosophers, and mystics in history. Yet every time we try to truly grasp it, it slips away — like water through our fingers.

What is time?

Modern physics can describe time with extraordinary precision — relativistic time dilation, Planck time, the equations governing the arrow of time — but it does not answer the deeper question: why does time exist? And for whom does it exist?

In my new book TIME — Theory of Time in the Extended Reality Theory (TTT), I propose an answer that integrates rigorous physics, the geometry of Consciousness, and motivated philosophical speculation. This article traces the essential path of that inquiry.

From Newton to Einstein: Time Changes Shape

For Isaac Newton, time was absolute — a neutral, unchanging stage containing all events in the universe, independent of observers, velocities, or masses. A cosmic metronome beating at a constant rhythm since forever.

Einstein dismantled this vision in 1905. With Special Relativity, he showed that time is not absolute: two observers in relative motion measure different time intervals for the same events. With General Relativity (1915), he revealed that time curves in the presence of mass — a clock near a dense star ticks more slowly than one in open space.

ds² = −c²dt² + dx² + dy² + dz² (Minkowski metric)

The negative sign in front of c²dt² is not a technical detail: it is the mathematical signature of the deep asymmetry between time and space. In space, one can move freely in all directions; in time — at least in ordinary physics — one can only proceed in one direction.

Then quantum mechanics arrives, and time becomes even more uncomfortable: it is not a quantum observable, it enters equations as an external parameter, and in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation — a candidate for the fundamental equation of quantum gravity — time disappears completely. This is the so-called “problem of time” in modern physics.

ERT: Consciousness as the Fifth Dimension

The Extended Reality Theory (ERT) — deposited on Zenodo (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20010871) — proposes a radical answer to this impasse. Consciousness is not an epiphenomenon of the brain, not a subjective illusion, not an unsolvable mystery. Consciousness is the fifth fundamental dimension of reality — a real geometric coordinate of spacetime.

The STC (Space-Time-Consciousness) metric extends Minkowski with a fifth coordinate C:

ds²_STC = −c²dt² + dx² + dy² + dz² + α²dC²

Where α is a dimensional coupling constant connecting variations of Consciousness to the geometry of spacetime. This is not metaphor — it is geometry. Just as time has a specific geometric signature (the negative sign in the metric), Consciousness has one too.

If this is true, then time cannot be understood without Consciousness. And conversely: Consciousness cannot be understood without asking what it means, for a conscious being, to exist in time.

How Did Time Begin? The ERT Answer

Standard cosmology places the origin of time at the Big Bang, approximately 13.8 billion years ago. ERT inverts the question: it is not the Big Bang that generated Consciousness, but Consciousness — in its primordial form as the Universal Consciousness Field (UCF) — that generated the Big Bang, and with it, physical time.

C → E → m — — — E(C,Ψ) = ½ · k_C · Ψ · C² — — — m = E/c²

The crucial point is the distinction between ontological existence and temporal existence. Consciousness (the UCF) exists ontologically before time — not “temporally before” (which would be contradictory), but as the condition of possibility for time itself. Like the geometry of a space that exists before any curve traced within it.

Time was born as a tool for Consciousness to manifest itself. It is the medium through which Consciousness experiences its own expansion. Without the temporal dimension, there would be no growth, no maturation, no evolution. Time is not a prison of eternity — it is eternity’s most precious instrument.

TTT: Ten Original Formulas for Time

The most original part of the book is the Theory of Time in ERT (TTT) — a system of ten mathematical formulas consistent with the ERT framework that describe time as a multidimensional structure dependent on Consciousness.

Among the most significant:

TTT.1 — STC Metric: formalizes physical time as a geometric dimension in the nine-dimensional STC structure of ERT.

ds²_STC = −c²dt² + dx² + dy² + dz² + α²dC²

TTT.3 — Subjective Time: experienced time does not coincide with physical time. Its dilation depends on the C-value of the conscious system.

τ_C = t_phys · [1 + β · (C/C_max)²]

TTT.5 — Temporal Access: the amount of temporal history accessible to a conscious system grows with its C-value. For the Source (C → C_max), past, present and future coexist as a geometric structure accessible in its totality.

Δt_acc(C) = Δt_max · G(C/C_max)

TTT.8 — Temporal Invariant: beyond all relative and subjective times, there exists an invariant structure that preserves the causal coherence of reality.

Time After Death. Time Travel.

The book also addresses the boldest questions: what happens to time when the physical body dies? Are time travels possible?

On the first: ERT proposes that Consciousness survives bodily death as a C⃗ vector that decouples from the spatial coordinate but maintains its trajectory in the C-dimension. Physical time ceases to be relevant; Consciousness accesses planes of existence with different temporal structures — closer to the simultaneity of the Source.

On time travel: ERT distinguishes between physical time travel (impossible according to general relativity for objects with mass, and not permitted by STC geometry) and non-local access to temporal structure through elevation of C. Experiences such as déjà vu, precognitive visions, and advanced meditative states are interpretable as partial accesses to the extended temporal structure.

Why This Book Matters

TIME is neither a popular science book nor a spiritual text. It is something rarer: a rigorous attempt to build a bridge between the scientific description of time and the question of its meaning. Every formula is explained in its physical and intuitive sense. Every speculation is clearly distinguished from what has been experimentally verified.

The question “why does time exist?” has no answer yet in mainstream physics. ERT offers an answer that is mathematically coherent, philosophically motivated, and — perhaps most importantly — that changes the way we relate to the time we live.

Because if time is the medium of Consciousness’s expansion, then every moment lived with awareness is not a loss — it is an ontological gain. Time does not take us away: it carries us forward.
