Ashley Gonzalez Fired After Racist Instagram Post

Racist officer fired and community calls for police and Marine investigations and TCOLE certification revoked

The Houston Police Department (HPD) confirmed Friday that they fired Ashley Gonzalez following an expedited Internal Affairs investigation into her racist Instagram rant.

In the viral video, Gonzalez repeatedly used the N-word, mocked slavery, and described her mistreatment of Black people while on and off duty. The video prompted community and national outrage and protests outside HPD headquarters Friday morning.

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz Jr. issued a direct, strongly worded statement announcing her termination. FOX 26 Houston said:

“The behavior exhibited by Ashley Gonzalez was abhorrent, disgusting, and entirely unacceptable. It is deeply disturbing and has no place in law enforcement or in our community.”

Houston Mayor John Whitmire also condemned racist comments, calling them “outrageous and reprehensible,” according to Houston Public Media.

When I first posted this story, Gonzalez was suspended on paid leave pending an Internal Affairs investigation.

It should be noted that Ashley’s firing does not automatically revoke her Texas police certification (TCOLE) from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. They would need to review the case and determine whether she should be barred from Texas law enforcement. At the time of this publication, it’s unclear if the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement will investigate.

However, Friday morning community activists, Dr. Candice Matthews and Quanell X held a press conference and demonstration demanding that Gonzalez be fired at her scheduled meeting and: According to reports from KHOU 11 and FOX 26, activists call for full investigations of Gonzalez’s police and Marine history, including her arrest record, possible misconduct and excessive force reports, and internal communications. They are also demanding her TCOLE certification be removed so she cannot get another law enforcement job in Texas and potentially harm others.

These demands are valid because Ashley Gonzalez is allegedly planning to appeal the decision and based on the history of officers involved in racist incidents or killing innocent, unarmed Black people being reinstated. The most glaring example is the Breonna Taylor case. According to NPR, Myles Cosgrove, the officer who actually shot and killed Breonna was never charged with her death. Only 2 of the 4 officers involved faced any real consequences and six years later the Feds are trying to dismiss the case against 2 of the officers who falsified documents to get the warrant.

Cosgrove was fired for misconduct, but allowed to keep his police certification and rehired in another town. Let that sink in — the man who actually killed Breonna Taylor was allowed to walk away with a clean record and get another job in a nearby town — so a racist rant may not stop another district from hiring Gonzalez.

“The phenomenon known as “wandering cops” has been an issue for decades in the U.S. in part because there is a lack of national coordination to keep track of officers with a history of misconduct.”

If the system never convicted the cop that killed Breonna Taylor and allowed him to get another job in a nearby county — there’s a high chance that Gonzalez could just wander to another county bringing her hateful, racist views and vengeance to other innocent Black people.

The bad apple theory isn’t valid when the rotten apples are just quietly put in another basket. Bad apples have deadly consequences in law enforcement and drains local resources when police departments and municipalities have to pay for their misconduct.

In 2026, all police departments and unions should have zero tolerance for racism and biased officers.

HPD should be commended for their swift firing but they need to work with the Texas commission and the military to make sure racists cops don’t rise through the ranks and later embarrass and compromise the integrity of these institutions.

It should be noted that she has since issued a weak apology “if” she offended anyone for her “nasty” comments. She didn’t deny or acknowledge her racist views or alleged actions.
