Cursor Just Let You Close Your Laptop

Originally published by winkrun, June 18, 2026 Filed under AI Engineering

Last night, popular AI coding tool Cursor dropped a huge cloud-focused update for its AI Agent feature, solving one of the most frustrating pain points for local AI agent users: you no longer have to leave your laptop open and drain local resources to keep long-running tasks going.

Seamless Switching Between Local and Cloud Agents

Before this update, if you ran a long Agent task on Cursor, you had to keep your laptop open the whole time — close the lid, and your task dies immediately. Now you can move a locally running Agent to the cloud with one click, and it will keep executing even after you shut your laptop.

You can even send new instructions to your Agents from your phone, run multiple Agents in parallel, and when the task is finished, Cursor will automatically generate a ready-to-merge pull request with a full demo of the work.

Build a Reusable Cloud Dev Environment in 10 Minutes

Cursor now helps you spin up a full cloud development environment in under 10 minutes. You can watch the progress live in a shared terminal, and all the boring setup work like dependency installation is handled automatically by the Agent.

Once your environment is built, it gets saved as a reusable snapshot. This cuts down startup time for future cloud Agents drastically, and the Agent can test code changes and iterate directly in the cloud until the output meets your requirements. If you commit the snapshot config to your project’s .cursor/environment.json file, your entire team can reuse the exact same environment—no more one-off local setup for every developer.

Isolated Cloud Child Agents for Task Separation

Type the /in-cloud command, and you'll spin up a child Agent running on an isolated cloud VM. Each child Agent gets its own dedicated server and separate code branch, so it will never mess with or slow down your local working environment.

This feature is perfect for running long-running tasks or multiple parallel jobs at once. Whether you’re fixing a broken CI pipeline, debugging a production issue, or exploring an unfamiliar codebase, your local workspace stays clean, fast, and untouched.

You can also use the /babysit command to let a cloud Agent monitor and iterate on a pull request until it meets all merge requirements, all without tying up your local Cursor session.

Cursor for iOS Beta Is Now Live

Alongside the cloud Agent launch, a TestFlight beta of Cursor for iOS is now available. You can manage all your Agent tasks directly from your iPhone, and a full public release is expected soon.

What Developers Are Saying

The update has already sparked tons of conversation from real users in the community.

One developer who only gets fragmented spare time to code said they only have 90 minutes after their kid falls asleep each night to work — before this update, their time in front of the keyboard was the hard limit on what they could build. Now tasks can keep running in the cloud while they’re away, breaking that time limit entirely. Another user joked they can finally let their laptop rest while they merge code from the couch, and shared a demo of exactly that workflow. Multiple users mentioned they had just complained about the lack of this “keep running with the lid closed” feature the day before the update dropped.

One joke that went viral: “Is Elon about to win the AI race?” That’s a testament to how impressed the community is with Cursor’s release speed — one user put it simply: “They ship features so fast it’s crazy.”

Another comment hit on a pain point that resonated with a lot of developers: “The irony of cloud Agents is that you can finally close your laptop… but you still have to review every single line of output it generates yourself.”
