What if these Spurs players stuck around?

Tottenham is thriving under their new manager, Ange Postecoglou. His attacking-first approach is a joy to watch, making people forget about the painful performances over the past few years.

It might be fair to point out that recruiting players who fit into his philosophy has played a crucial role in their current uprising. Although painful rebuilding was widely recognised as what they really needed, the club opted for a manager who focuses on winning trophies by acquiring and utilising experienced players. However, it seems the lessons have been learned. They chose the right manager and brilliant players who also haven’t depleted their notoriously shy bank account balance.

Speaking of the players who recently joined the club or arrived last summer and are thriving now, it makes me wonder if there were any players who could have excelled under the current manager and system. Here are my thoughts.

Harry Kane worked with him briefly but chose to leave, so he’s not included. Let’s discuss the players who left the club before Ange joined.

Christian Eriksen

It’s necessary to mention that Eriksen chose to leave the club for a new adventure, although the club wanted to keep him. But what if he had stuck around for a couple of years and met Ange? I reckon he would have been one of the pillars in the system. He’s not only an assist machine but also capable of scoring goals inside and outside of the box. He’s creative like Maddison, but they are slightly different, so I don’t think it’s necessary to pair them together on the same pitch. Still, he would be a great alternative to change the tactic and system when things aren’t going well for the team during a match.

Lucas Moura

Even though he has probably passed his prime (not sure when his prime was, though), he would have been a great asset to the team. He’s quick and has a great work ethic for the team. While not a regular starting member, he could have been used as a substitute to shake the match around the 70th minute, similar to Peric. His finishing is never first class, but he has a fair ability to assist, and his pressing in the front was underrated. His fearless dribbling would be useful when they struggle to break down opponents sitting back.

It’s surprising that I can’t think of more players. Perhaps my memory is not great, or it means Spurs basically didn’t have many Premier League regular starting players.

Many injuries took down the team from the top of the league, but they managed to get through the period without losing too many points. It seems they are now ready to bounce back.

As Ange said, it looks like there is more to come.
