The Colleagues Who Save You

I don’t think internships survive on skill alone. They survive on colleagues.

The kind who reply within two minutes when you text, “Are you near your laptop?” The kind who say “send it, I’ll handle it” before you even finish explaining the situation.

There’s something very funny about work friendships. One minute you’re discussing completely random things, and the next minute one of you is panicking because the client suddenly wants a last-minute change while you’re nowhere near your system.

And somehow, this always happens at the worst possible time.

You’re outside. You’ve finally stepped away from work. Maybe you’re eating, maybe you’re travelling, maybe you just opened your phone to relax for five minutes.

And then the message comes.

“Urgent change.” “Need this ASAP.” “Can we update the file?”

Your heart drops instantly because your laptop is not with you.

So you do the only thing that makes sense.

You call your colleague.

“Hey… are you busy?” Which is actually code for “Please save my life for five minutes.”

And without making it a big deal, they do.

They open your file. They export things. They fix tiny details while you awkwardly explain changes over a call like a lost GPS voice.

“No no move it slightly left.” “WAIT wrong layer.” “Okay perfect send send send.”

And the funniest part is how normal this becomes.

At some point, all of you just start carrying each other through the workday without even realising it.

One day you’re the one asking for help. The next day you’re the one helping.

Someone else is outside. Someone else forgot their charger. Someone else can’t access a file. Someone else is drowning in revisions.

And suddenly you’re the one saying, “It’s okay, I’ll do it.”

There’s something very comforting about that exchange.

Not in a dramatic way. Just in a very human way.

Because work becomes lighter when people stop treating everything like “your problem” and “my problem.”

It quietly becomes our problem.

And honestly, those moments end up being the most memorable.

Not the polished presentations. Not the perfect deliverables.

But the small acts of saving each other constantly.

The “did you eat?” messages during stressful days. The random snack breaks in the middle of deadlines. The screen-sharing sessions where nobody knows what they’re doing but everyone is pretending to stay calm.

Even the panic becomes funny when you’re not dealing with it alone.

I think that’s what makes certain workplaces special.

It’s not just the work itself. It’s knowing someone has your back when things suddenly go wrong.

And maybe that’s why some colleagues stop feeling like colleagues after a point.

They become the people attached to your everyday memories.

The people who saw your stressed version, sleepy version, confused version, overworked version and still stayed patient through all of it.

The people who quietly made difficult days easier.

One urgent file at a time.
