The People We Never Really Get Over

There are people we leave behind, and then there are people who never really leave us.

The strange thing about human relationships is that closure is often a myth. We like to believe that time heals everything, that distance softens memories, and that eventually every person becomes a chapter we’ve finished reading. But life rarely works that neatly.

Sometimes years pass. We move cities. We change jobs. We become different versions of ourselves. And yet, a song, a street, a photograph, or even a random Tuesday afternoon can bring someone rushing back into our minds as though they never left.

The people we never really get over aren’t always the ones we loved the most.

Sometimes they are the people who saw us during a particular season of our lives. The friend who knew our dreams before they became responsibilities. The person who believed in us before we learned to believe in ourselves. The almost-love that never had the chance to become a full story.

Perhaps what stays isn’t the person at all.

Perhaps it’s the version of ourselves that existed with them.

When we miss someone years later, we often assume we’re missing them. But what if we’re actually grieving a moment in time? A version of ourselves that only existed in their presence? The certainty we felt. The hope we carried. The innocence we hadn’t yet lost.

Memory has a peculiar way of preserving people.

It edits out the arguments. It softens the disappointments. It frames ordinary moments in golden light. We remember conversations that felt insignificant at the time. We remember laughter. We remember the way someone looked at us when we were becoming who we wanted to be.

And because memory is a storyteller, it turns people into myths.

This is why some people become impossible to forget.

Not because they were perfect.

Not because they were meant to stay.

But because they arrived at a time when they changed something fundamental within us.

Every story has characters who appear for only a few chapters and yet leave the deepest impact. Real life is no different.

Some people are not meant to accompany us to the end of the journey. They are simply meant to point us in a direction we wouldn’t have discovered on our own.

The tragedy is that we often spend years wishing they had stayed.

The gift is realizing that their purpose was never to stay.

It was to transform.

There is a quiet kind of maturity that comes from accepting this. Understanding that not every meaningful relationship is meant to last forever. Some people are seasons. Some are lessons. Some are mirrors that show us who we are capable of becoming.

And perhaps getting over someone was never the goal.

Maybe the goal is to stop treating their absence as a wound and start recognizing their presence as a gift.

After all, the people we never really get over are often the people who helped write parts of us.

And how do you get over someone who has become part of your story?

You don’t.

You simply learn to carry them differently.
