What’s NOT in my Camera Bag 2024

A long overdue update to what I’m (not) shooting with anymore.

The secret is I don’t need a bag to take my Ricoh GRiii everywhere. Ha! Jk jk I still take a massive bag filled with stuff I don’t need and won’t use…just like you!

I started this blog right at the end of 2021. That feels both like yesterday and also forever ago.

Is it just me or has the way time passed since Covid stared just seemed weird. Almost like each year has been spread across two years?

I swear that 2021 felt like 2020 Pt. 2, and likewise 2023 felt like 2022 Pt.2 . Does that make any sense?

Okay, rambling over, I started this blog RIGHT at the end of my time shooting Sony cameras and coming BACK to Canon cameras.

One of my first posts was about the Sony A7iii vs the Canon R6. You can read that **here**.

In the time since then, I’ve tried out and moved on from a variety of cameras. Let’s list them, and at the end I’ll give my reasons or provide links to more complete reviews.

I was happy and forunteate enought to find great deals on both my purchasing and selling of all of these cameras so the cost expendicutre wasn’t as bad as it may appear. If you shop around and have a bit of patience you can also waste less (but still waste, let's be honest) your money on the “new camera dance” too.

Right now, there are plenty of cameras I’d love to try out, but almost zero that would give me more than what I already have. My perfect camera doesn’t exist (yet).

If you’re wondering what that could be, it would be a mirrorless version of the Pentax K1, with a LOWER resolution full frame 24mpx sensor, in a retro styled body like the Nikon ZF. In a perfect world it would also come in m42 mount for all my vintage lenses.

Come on Pentax, we believe in you! Please! I know you probably won’t but still.

Honestly, Canon would probably come out with a retro styled RF camera before Pentax started making my dream camera.

The List

  • Sony A7iii | SOLD to fund the R6 purchase once I confirmed I preferred the R6 in real world use. (**review link**)
  • Canon R6 | STILL HERE
  • Canon R5 | SOLD because it didn’t fit my needs. (**review link**)
  • Ricoh GRiii (28mm) Base | SOLD prematurely because I thought I enjoyed the 40mm version more.
  • Ricoh GRiii X (40mm) Base | SOLD because the 40mm FOV never ended up fitting into my style as hoped. (**review link**)
  • Leica CL | STILL HERE
  • Fuji Xpro3 | SOLD because I could never get along with the colors and mine had two defective shutters/shutter buttons (both replaced by Fuji, neither of which convinced me to keep bothering with it).
  • Canon R5 (again)| Re-bought for a project, and re-SOLD when the project was finished.
  • Ricoh GRiii 28mm (Street Edition) | STILL HERE
  • Epson RD1s | STILL HERE (**review link**)
  • Pentax Spotmatic (Film, Silver) | STILL HERE (**review link**)
  • Lumix S5ii | SOLD because it didn’t live up to the hype AND because it was supposed to be a budget Leica L-mount experience, which it also was not.
  • Leica SL | SOLD because despite it producing amazing images, it was a heavy brick shaped pain in the neck to take on trips/hikes. (**review link**)
  • Leica M246 Monochrom | SOLD because ALSO despite it producing some of my favorite photos ever, I just never used it enough and my bag would be too full of cameras instead of lenses (more useful to me).
  • Pentax Spotmatic (Film, Black) | STILL HERE , albeit with a shutter issue so mostly it’s being used in a crippled status and will be kept for parts at some point)
  • ADDED July 2024: Nikon ZF | I took a chance and am mostly much happier with the camera than I was expecting. Full review, someday.
  • ADDED Sept 2024: Pentax Zoom 90 (Fim) | Bought in North Wales, loving the easy shooting experience and flexibility. Full auto everything film camera. (**review link**)

Here’s a list of all my published reviews on the cameras listed above as well. Cheers!
