On cooperation as a property of structure, not behavior

I’ve published two foundational papers on Zenodo that reframe social coordination as a problem of social environment, not behavior.

This is an ontology of social environments: it defines what a social environment is, what aggregated states are possible, how they differ structurally, and why they are incompatible. It does not prescribe — it describes the space of the possible and the impossible.

Most approaches to cooperation focus on behavior: how to motivate, how to control, how to build trust. This work is different. It treats cooperation as a property of environmental architecture rather than as a result of individual decisions, ethics, or governance.

The object of analysis shifts: not institutions, not norms, not behavior — but social environment as a system of constraints that defines the space of rationally available strategies. In this framework, behavior is the dependent variable, and the environment is the independent variable.

The theory distinguishes two structurally incompatible aggregated states: hierarchical organization and decentralized self-organization. They follow different causal logics and cannot be transformed into one another through reform. Reform operates within architecture; decentralization requires its absence.

The second paper shows under what conditions a decentralized social environment emerges deterministically. Three necessary and sufficient conditions of self-organization are formulated, from which the Law of Autocatalytic Inevitability follows mathematically. A phase inversion point — Navpaki — is introduced, after which p2p cooperation becomes functionally dominant.

This has direct implications for the age of AI.

Instead of using artificial intelligence to optimize control or prediction, a decentralized social environment emerges with mathematical inevitability — one in which safety and alignment are not the result of control, but a quality of the architecture itself.

These papers are an ontological contribution, not a policy proposal.
