Kalfayan galleries

During my visit to the Kalfayan gallery, I met one of the artists that the gallery represents , her name was Evgenia Apostolou .

The first piece of the collection

Her work consists of paintings with a sculptural nature , by that, i mean that the technique she was using , was creating layers on the surface of the painting. She started by creating big paintings and continued to smaller ones . What this magnificent artist does , is take packs of bandages that she glues on the surface and paints over them, and she is repeating this process until the result satisfy her. In the end, she is pulling some of the bandages in order to create multiple layers and show the hidden color underneath .

The latest piece that she included to the collection

Her works continued to a smaller size , the reason for that is very simple and not that much of a symbolic nature , she just wanted to create multiple pieces , so she could stack them together. But the interesting part of those pieces is that she used bandages of previous paintings that were pulled out of the surface.

Also, it is very important to say that the reason she has not pulled the bandages of the surface is because she wanted the viewer to pay attention to the texture of the painting and that much to its sculptural nature .

She is recycling and putting different materials on different paintings, giving them a different meaning . We could say that by doing so, the smaller paintings are creations / formations of the bigger and older ones , she is creating a family consisting of smaller and bigger parts .

The colors that she’s using , as she stated, are a symbol of her inner mental phase , they are representing feelings and by doing so she gets the opportunity to show off from inside of the painting. She also stated that the color red and it’s tones are very familiar to her and that it is a color that represents her , in her work .
