Twisted Family Loyalty: Protecting Abandoners, Shunning Abandoneds

Returning Children as Heretics

Family loyalty is often portrayed as unconditional. A sacred bond that transcends mistakes and hardships. Yet, there is a strange and unsettling dynamic in some families where loyalty is fiercely extended to those who shirk their responsibilities (such as parents who desert their kids) while the victims of that heartlessness, the children who return as adults seeking connection, are met with indifference, rejection, or even hostility.

What kind of family protects the abandoner and shuns the abandoned?

Sanctification of the Absent Parent

In many families, the narrative around an absent parent, whether due to mental illness, addiction, or sheer neglect, is carefully curated to minimize their wrongdoing. Excuses are made: “They weren’t ready,” “They had their own struggles,” “Times were different then,” “You just don’t understand what they went through.” The abandoner is shielded from accountability, their flaws softened into tragic quirks rather than recognized as failures.

Meanwhile, the family member who was left behind is expected to accept this revisionist history without question. If they express hurt, they are accused of being bitter or unforgiving. If they seek answers, they are disruptive. If they hope for a warm welcome or reconciliation upon their return, they are often treated as intruders. Heretics challenging the family’s carefully constructed mythos.

Returning Child as a Threat

A baby who was abandoned, then later seeks connection as an adult poses an implicit threat to the family’s equilibrium. Their very existence is a reminder of the abandoner’s personal issues and self-centeredness. The seeker’s desire for answers or belonging disrupts the comfortable silence that’s been maintained for years.

In some cases, the family has spent decades rationalizing the abandonment(s), and the return of this person forces them to confront uncomfortable truths. Rather than face this, it is easier to cast the returning child as the problem, the one who is “stirring up the past,” “being dramatic,” or “not letting things go.” The abandoner, comfortably integrated into the family, is spared scrutiny, while the abandoned is treated as an outsider.

Cruelty of Conditional Loyalty

This selective loyalty reveals a disturbing truth: some families prioritize harmony over justice, comfort over truth. The abandoner is protected not because they deserve it, but because holding them accountable would require an emotional reckoning the family is unwilling to face. Their unrecognized child(ren), on the other hand, are seen as an inconvenience. Living, breathing indictments of the family’s nonethical compromises.

There is a deep cruelty in this. It tells lost family members that their pain is less important than their abandoner’s comfort. That their need for connection is an imposition. That their very existence is a disruption to the family’s preferred narrative.

Heresy of Seeking Belonging

To seek connection after abandonment should not be an act of rebellion, yet in these families, it is treated as one. Returning family members are not heretics. They are simply human beings who dare to ask, “Do I matter?” And in the silence or rejection that follows, they receive their answer.

A family that protects the abandoner while shunning the abandoned has lost its moral compass. True loyalty should extend to the vulnerable, not just the comfortable. Anything less is not love, it is cowardice.
