The Things We Keep Circling

Some relationships never become emotionally simple again

There are people we spend years trying to explain logically because emotionally, it all still feels too dangerous to tell ourselves the full truth about them.

So instead, we make a habit of downplaying the connection that we had. Maybe we even attempt to turn it into something more socially acceptable. We call them old friends, bad timing, or a weird phase of our lives. We laugh when we talk about them because humor creates distance, and that distance feels safer than the honesty ever could.

But deep down we know that certain relationships we had don’t fit neatly into those boxes that we try to pack them in.

I think part of what makes some people so impossible to fully let go of is that there was never a clean ending to grieve. There was no dramatic breakup or some deep betrayal that was big enough to ruin the tenderness. There was only silence or drifting apart so gradually that by the time you realized what was happening, it already felt too late to stop it.

The silence piece of it feels more difficult to process because it leaves too much room for possibility of the relationship to survive.

We never really crossed the line fully enough to destroy each other, but we crossed it enough that a friendship stopped feeling emotionally simple after that. I don’t think either of us knew what to do with the connection except to keep circling it.

Looking back now, I think we spent years trying to make the connection intellectually manageable because, emotionally, it felt too consuming and too difficult to fit cleanly into the lives we were trying to build around it.

I wanted her to be braver and that is probably the hardest truth buried underneath the surface of this.

Not just braver for me, but braver with herself and with the things that seemed to surface only in moments where our conversations became too honest to comfortably acknowledge in broad daylight.

But it’s difficult to hate someone for not being ready when part of you understands exactly why they were afraid.

That’s exactly what makes this kind of grief so disorienting. There’s rarely a villain in it. There’s only two people who are standing on opposite sides of a locked door for years occasionally pressing their palms against it. Not trying to force it open anymore, just quietly hoping that the other person on the opposite side of that same door is wondering if you’re standing there too.

And eventually, life moves forward the way it always does.

Years pass quietly. People become different versions of themselves that we probably wouldn’t fully recognize all these years later. Yet every once in a while something small breaks through the surface and suddenly the connection feels emotionally present again. A sentence remembered out of nowhere or a simple dream that lingers too long after waking up.

Maybe that’s why I still kept the messages for so long. Not because I wanted the life we never had, but because sometimes I needed proof that I didn’t imagine the intensity of it. Proof that there really was something here that neither of us truly knew how to hold at the time.

I think some people leave not because the connection meant nothing, but because it eventually meant too much to keep carrying halfway.

And honestly, I think that’s the part that hurts the most. Not that the relationship ended and not even that it never fully became something else. But, it’s the realization that some people will alter the shape of your inner life permanently while never fully remaining part of your outer one.

There are connections that never become emotionally simple again once they’ve been felt deeply enough.

We only carry this quiet awareness that somewhere out there exists another person who remembers the same tension, the same “almosts”, the same conversations that probably should have meant less than they did.

And maybe that’s all certain relationships become in the end.

Not unfinished love stories.

Just people we keep carrying in quieter ways than we ever expected to.
