If you’ve ever placed a swap on Uniswap, Base, or any AMM and gotten a slightly worse price than you expected, there’s a good chance you weren’t unlucky. You were front-run, sandwiched, or back-run — and you never saw it coming, because the tools to see it coming have historically lived in the hands of a small group of sophisticated operators, not in the hands of the people actually placing the trades.

What Is MEV, and Why Should Traders Care?

MEV — Maximal Extractable Value — refers to the profit a block producer, validator, or bot can extract by reordering, inserting, or censoring transactions within a block. In practice, for the average DeFi user, MEV shows up as:

  • Sandwich attacks: a bot buys before your swap, lets your trade push the price up, then sells immediately after — pocketing the difference at your expense.
  • Front-running: a bot copies a profitable pending transaction and executes it first, taking the opportunity before the original sender.
  • Arbitrage extraction: bots exploit price differences across pools the instant they appear, often triggered by a user’s own trade.
  • Liquidation sniping: bots race to liquidate under-collateralized positions, extracting value that could otherwise flow back to protocol participants.

These aren’t rare edge cases. MEV extraction happens continuously, across nearly every liquid trading pair on every major EVM chain. Billions of dollars in cumulative value have been extracted from ordinary transactions since the concept was first formally documented in 2019. Most of it happens invisibly, buried in transaction data that requires specialized tooling to decode in real time.

The Core Problem: MEV Visibility Is a Monopoly

Sophisticated searchers, MEV bot operators, and institutional trading desks already have custom infrastructure to detect and act on MEV opportunities in real time. Retail users generally have none of this. The result is a structural information asymmetry: the people most exposed to MEV extraction are the least equipped to see it happening or understand what it’s costing them.

Existing MEV dashboards and analytics platforms are often slow, incomplete, or built on third-party data feeds that lag behind the mempool by critical seconds — long enough for the opportunity (and the story) to already be over.

How MEVAI Is Different: A Custom Detection Engine, Not a Recycled API

2. Pattern-based classification. The engine is built to recognize the structural signatures of sandwich attacks, arbitrage cycles, and liquidation events — not just flag “a large trade happened,” but identify the multi-transaction pattern that constitutes extraction.

3. Iterative accuracy refinement. Building an in-house detection system means constantly tightening edge cases — for example, correctly distinguishing genuine arbitrage opportunities from false positives caused by closed-loop trades that only look like arbitrage on the surface. This kind of precision is exactly what off-the-shelf API aggregation can’t deliver, because generic providers aren’t optimized for MEV-specific transaction semantics.

Real-World Example: Why This Matters

Earlier this year, a widely circulated case illustrated the stakes perfectly: an attacker who had phished roughly $500,000 in USDC on Base attempted to swap it into ETH through a Uniswap V4 pool with no slippage protection. The result was a swap executed at a catastrophic rate — the attacker walked away with a fraction of the stolen funds’ value, while a MEV bot captured the difference instantly.

The irony is sharp, but the underlying mechanic is exactly what happens — at smaller scale — to ordinary DeFi users every single day. Large, unprotected swaps are magnets for extraction. Most victims never realize a bot was on the other side of their trade, because there’s no accessible layer showing them that in the moment.

That’s the visibility gap MEVAI is built to close.
