The product designer’s biggest opportunity
The most sustainable product isn’t always the one you think it is.
The product designer’s biggest opportunity
The most sustainable product isn’t always the one you think it is.
If you’re a product designer, and your manager gives you a task of making product more sustainable.:
Where would you start?
Would you…
- Replace plastic with paper?
- Use recycled materials?
- Make the packaging smaller?
- Switch to bio-based materials?
These all sound like good ideas. But here’s the challenge:
How do you know which one actually makes the biggest difference?
This is exactly why every product designer should understand the basics of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
LCA doesn’t tell us what looks sustainable, it tells us what is more sustainable based on scientific evidence.
Why intuition isn’t enough
As consumers, we’re naturally influenced by what we can see.
Plastic packaging catches our attention.
Extra layers of wrapping feel wasteful.
A heavier package seems less eco-friendly.
But environmental impacts aren’t always visible.
Sometimes, the biggest contributor isn’t the package at all. It could be:
- the raw materials,
- the manufacturing process,
- transportation,
- the energy used during the product’s lifetime,
- or even how consumers use the product.
Without measuring the entire life cycle, we risk solving the wrong problem.
LCA helps designers focus on what matters most
Think of LCA as a medical check-up for a product.
Instead of guessing where the problem is, it identifies the environmental “hotspots” across every stage of the product’s life cycle — from raw material extraction to manufacturing, transportation, use, and end-of-life.
Once we know where the hotspots are, we can prioritize improvements that deliver the greatest environmental benefit.
This shifts product design from intuition-based decisions to data-driven decisions.
The designer’s biggest opportunity
One of the most exciting aspects of LCA is that it transforms sustainability from a compliance exercise into a design tool.
Instead of asking,
“How can we reduce plastic?”
designers begin asking,
- Where does the greatest environmental impact occur?
- Which design decision will create the biggest improvement?
- Can we reduce impacts without creating new environmental trade-offs?
- Are we solving the real problem — or just the most visible one?
These are the questions that lead to truly sustainable innovation.
LCA is becoming a core design skill
Across Europe, product sustainability is moving upstream into the design process.
Policies such as the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Digital Product Passport (DPP) are encouraging companies to consider environmental impacts from the earliest stages of product development.
Many companies are also integrating LCA into:
- Eco-design
- Sustainable product development
- Product Environmental Footprint (PEF)
- Carbon footprint reporting
- Circular economy strategies
As a result, product designers who understand LCA are becoming increasingly valuable, not because they perform every assessment themselves, but because they know how to interpret LCA results and translate them into better design decisions.
Because in sustainability, the goal isn’t to improve the part of the product that attracts the most attention.
It’s to improve the part that makes the biggest difference.
And sometimes, those are two very different things.
The good news is that you don’t need to be an LCA expert to start using LCA in product design.
Many companies and researcher already publish environmental information for their products, and there are practical ways to interpret LCA results , even if you’ve never built an LCA model yourself.
In my next article, I’ll show you how product designers, engineers, and sustainability professionals can quickly read an LCA report, identify the key hotspots, and use those insights to make better design decisions.
