Perceptions about dinosaurs that changed the most from how the perceptions used to be

I’m no dinosaur expert, but I used to read about dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals a lot. Among the things that I had noticed about dinosaurs are the differences of how they were depicted from the time that their fossils were first discovered onward. There were several ways that dinosaur fans and experts had looked at dinosaurs that had changed consistently as time had gone by. Here are the main ways the perceptions changed.

1)The idea that dinosaurs were giant lizards

Apatosaurus

The word dinosaur, which means terrible lizard, was coined in 1826. People in those days assumed that dinosaurs were giant prehistoric lizards. While dinosaurs were reptiles, they weren’t lizards.

2. The idea that all dinosaurs were giants

Compsognathus

While certain dinosaurs grew to size that rivaled that of big vehicles and even whales in some cases, certain dinosaurs grew to be smaller than humans, and some only grew to be around the size of chickens.

3. The true shape of certain dinosaurs

The above image was what people previously thought what Megalosaurus looked like. This was an error based on finding a small number of bones, and people jumping to conclusions on the physical description of the dinosaur. This was a constant issue in the earlier days of fossil discoveries, as the people that were finding fossils in those days weren’t as careful at recovering the fossils of these prehistoric animals.

4. The lifestyle of certain dinosaurs

The above dinosaur is the Oviraptor. It’s name mean egg thief, and it got this name because of the discovery that suggested that it was stealing eggs from a nest. This is one of the most well known factual errors of how the lifestyle of certain dinosaurs, as well as certain other prehistoric animals, were depicted. It was later learned the killed Oviraptor was trying to defend its nest from Protoceratops, a vegetarian dinosaur that killed the Oviraptor out of defense.

5. Certain dinosaurs had feathers

It wasn’t known in the early days of dinosaur discoveries that any dinosaurs had feathers. It was previously assumed that all dinosaurs had skin that were like that of modern reptiles.

6. Certain dinosaurs became birds

The discovery of Archaeopteryx in the late 1800s became a groudbreaking find. The fossil gave great support to the idea of evolution, and it gave the idea that certain dinosaurs had evolved into birds. Archeaopteryx differed from the birds alive today by having fingers, a bony tail, and teeth.

7. The idea that all large prehistoric reptiles were dinosaurs

Kronosaurus

Certain Pterosaurs, which included Quetzalcoatlus and Pteranodon, were large reptiles, but none of the Pterosaurs were dinosaurs. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles. Marine reptiles, including Plesiosaurs, Ichthyosaurs, and Pliosaurs (which included Kronosaurus) weren’t dinosaurs either. They were a separate group of reptiles. There were even turtles and crocodilians that lived in dinosaur times.

8. The idea that the Tyrannosaurus Rex was the largest predatory dinosaur

It became the most popular predatory dinosaur, and was among the most popular dinosaurs ever, along with Apatosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and Ankylosaurus. The T-Rex was previously thought of as the largest predator to ever walk the Earth, until later discovered fossil evidence states that Spinosaurus, Giganotosaurus, and Carcharodontosaurus grew even larger than the T-Rex.
