In the Stillness of Summer, A Story of Change Unfolds

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”

It’s summer as I write this, kind of days when afternoons feel still, and time slows down just enough for you to notice what you usually rush past. Somewhere between the quiet and the lingering heat, I came across this quote on the website of Pehchaan The Street School.

This quote is often read, shared, and admired. But its true meaning is understood when we actually see it happening in real life.

Here, education is not about temporary help or short-term solutions. It’s about building something that lasts. The students aren’t just given answers; they are taught how to find them. They’re not just told what to do; they’re encouraged to think, to question, to grow.

Pehchaan The Street School stands as a beacon of hope for underprivileged students, who don’t have access to formal schooling and thus are the ones who are often denied the opportunity to learn.

At our eleven-year-old organisation, over 1600+ students from all over Delhi- NCR region comes together at our 10 different learning centers. It is quietly making a difference by offering free, quality education and, more importantly, a sense of ‘belonging’ to underprivileged students.

Behind everything that Pehchaan The Street School has built stands a force that often works quietly, yet makes the loudest impact — its volunteers, group of passionate individuals. Some stand in classrooms, some work behind the scenes, and some support from afar; but together, they create a space where learning continues, despite all odds.

From modest beginnings to building a strong presence, Pehchaan The Street School’s journey reflects resilience, patience, and an unwavering belief in the power of education.

Every collaboration, every connection, every effort counts. Size of support doesn’t matter. Rather, its all about shared vision and shared responsibility towards a better tomorrow.

Bridging the distance with Technology

At our Noida Centre, something powerful has quietly taken shape. Twelve computers have been set up, and regular computer classes have begun for the students. Isn’t it a great news?

In today’s world, computers are not luxury but necessity for simple to complex tasks. From education to job opportunities, everything is increasingly connected to technology. For many students, access to computers can feel distant or even impossible.

But here, things are changing.

For many students, this is their first opportunity to explore and understand the world of computers. They will now be able to use computers and work on basic tools like MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word and even more. These are the same tools that most of us have used at least once in our lives, whether for school projects, presentations, or simple assignments.

Learning how to make presentations, creating spreadsheets, and typing documents will help them in their studies and also prepare them for future opportunities. What may feel basic to us can be a big new thing for them.

These are not just computer skills, they are essential life skills in today’s world, helping them feel more confident and ready to face new opportunities.

The Power of Youth-Led Collaboration

Change becomes successful when people come together with a shared purpose.

Recently, Pehchaan The Street School collaborated with Girl Up Raabta (India), a youth-led volunteer group. The team visited the Kamla Nagar Centre and conducted a bookmark-making workshop for the students.

Using simple materials like paper and ribbons, they created a space where creativity could flow freely. Around 100 students participated with excitement and curiosity. For many of them, it was not just about making bookmarks, it was about expressing themselves.

After the activity, eatables and chocolates were distributed, bringing smiles to every face present.

Such collaborations show how young people can create meaningful impact. When learning is made fun and interactive, it builds confidence. It encourages children to make mistakes and learn from them, to create, and to believe in their ideas.

Moments of Achievement That Matter

Students of Pehchaan the Street School never miss a chance to make us feel proud of them. I am saying this because recently CBSE Class 10th Results were out and it has brought proud moments for the organisation.

Priya has achieved an impressive 84.71 percent, Pushkar Kumar has scored 61 percent and Gaurav secured 67 percent. I feel truly happy for them that they have passed with flying colours. Do you also feel their success as personal too?

These numbers may seem simple, but the journey behind them is not.

Each percentage reflects hours of hard work, dedication, and the support system built around our students. It reflects the effort of teachers, volunteers, and the organisation that stood by them consistently.

It is not just a milestone for them but for whole of Pehchaan the Street School as well. It is proof that with the right support and opportunities, they can achieve what once seemed out of reach. If we stand by them, they will keep achieving things like these and even more.

Learning Through Creativity

Education is not only about books and exams. It is also about creativity, imagination, and joy.

What if some sessions are conducted which allow students to think differently, to experiment, and to enjoy the process of learning.

At the Noida Centre, an engaging clay activity session was conducted by Atma Nirbhar Soch — Think Tank. Students used clay and magnets to create different shapes and designs.

The room was filled with excitement. Hands were busy creating, minds were exploring, and ideas were coming to life.

Such sessions play an important role in overall development. They allow students to think differently, to experiment, and to enjoy the process of learning.

The session ended with a small celebration, including cake, chocolates, Frooti, and chips. Moments like these may seem small, but they create memories that stay with the students for a long time.

More Than Just Education

Pehchaan The Street School is not just focused on teaching lessons. It focuses on building confidence, creating safe spaces, and ensuring that every child feels valued.

Here, students are not defined by labels. They are given identity cards, proper classes, and an environment that feels like a real school. Volunteers interact with them not just as teachers, but as mentors and friends.

Over time, students’ lives begin to change.

They learn to speak with confidence.

They realize about their potential and limitless possibilities they have.

They start believing in themselves.

They become stronger, more independent, and more hopeful.

This is the kind of change that cannot always be measured in numbers.

Step Forward, they’re Waiting for You

If you are in Delhi or planning to visit, you can take a step beyond just reading about this change, you can experience it.

Visiting a centre of Pehchaan The Street School is a wholesome experience. Spending even a little time with the students, talking to them, listening to their stories, and sharing a few moments can create a meaningful connection. In those conversations, something shifts. You will find yourself drawn into their world. This experience is going to change you for good. And somewhere in between those shared moments, you could see a reflection of innocence, of dreams, of a younger version of yourself too.

Sometimes, just showing up is enough.

There are also many simple ways to contribute:

You can donate stationery like notebooks, pens, and school kits.

You can contribute food items or sponsor meals for the students.

You can support digital learning by helping with computers and other resources.

You can also contribute towards basic infrastructure like fans, lights, or coolers that make the learning environment better.

You can donate a School Chalein Kit which costs just Rs 300 for you but priceless to them. This contains Notebooks, Stationeries, Lunch boxes and other essential items and in special occasions, Holi colours if Holi’s festival is around.

You can turn your special days into something far more meaningful than just a celebration but an unforgettable warm experience. Birthdays, milestones, or even the smallest personal victories can become grand when you choose to share them with the students. It’s an experience that quietly stays with you long after you leave.

This is your chance to come forward, to step into their world, to share your time, your stories, and your smiles. Sometimes, our gestures speak larger than words. In our case, showing up is enough to make students feel seen, valued, and remembered.

A Journey Built on Small Steps

And as this journey continues, Pehchaan The Street School stands as a quiet reminder of what consistent effort, collective belief, and compassion can truly achieve. It is not just about how far it has come, but about the many lives it continues to touch along the way.

And slowly, these small steps come together to create something much bigger.

A future filled with possibility.

A journey filled with hope.

Because in the end, real change is not just about improving numbers, it is about changing lives.

Though, the journey is still unfolding, with many more paths to explore and many more lives to reach. But one thing remains certain that nothing is possible without collective efforts. We have to make sure to keep supporting organisations like Pehchaan The Street School and thereby supporting little minds and the notion of education for all.
