Revamp Your Home for Spring with These 5 Must-Do Cleaning Tasks

E.Lee Sule

Spring is finally here, and with it comes the urge to declutter, deep clean, and freshen up our homes. After a long winter spent indoors, looking at the rain (in my case) or the snow (my childhood) or just “not enough sun, too much weather” (my mom, on the SE Coast) it’s time to open the windows, let the sunshine in, and tackle those cleaning tasks that have been piling up. Not sure where to start? No problem — I’ve put together a basic spring cleaning checklist for homeowners that will help you get your home sparkling clean and ready for the season ahead. You’ve got this!

Tips for deep cleaning your kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of a lot of homes, making it one of the most challenging rooms to keep clean. Start by clearing off your countertops and wiping them down with a microfiber cloth and an all-purpose cleaner. Next, move on to your appliances — clean out your refrigerator, defrost your freezer, and run the self-cleaning cycle on your oven. Yeah, my oven doesn’t have that, either. This means we’re using elbow grease and oven spray. Don’t forget to wipe down the exterior of your appliances as well!

Next, tackle your cabinets and drawers. Take everything out and give them a good wipe down, and then reorganize your items by category. Finally, clean your stove and range hood, and finish off by sweeping and mopping your floors.

The bathroom is another area of the home that can quickly become dirty and cluttered. Start by clearing out any old or expired products (RIP lipsticks I bought right before Covid) and then wipe down your counters and sink with a disinfectant cleaner. Move on to your toilet — use a toilet bowl cleaner and scrub the inside of the bowl with a brush. Next, clean your shower and tub, paying special attention to any grout or tile. Finally, scrub your floors and toilet base, and replace any old or worn-out towels.

Bedrooms: Tips for decluttering and deep cleaning bedrooms and closets.

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, but it’s hard to relax when there’s clutter everywhere. Start by decluttering your surfaces — remove any items that don’t belong and put them in their proper place. When was the last time you rotated that mattress? Do that, but check whether your mattress is meant to be flipped or rotated. Next, tackle your closet — take everything out and sort through your items, donating or selling anything you no longer need. We all remember The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, yes? Finally, dust your surfaces and vacuum your floors, including under your bed.

Tackling the Living Room

The living room is the place where we relax and entertain, but it’s also one of the most clutter-prone areas of the home. Start by decluttering your surfaces — remove any old magazines or papers, and put away any items that don’t belong. Next, dust your furniture and clean your electronics, including your TV, speakers, and gaming console. Finally, vacuum your floors, including under your furniture and in any crevices. Yes, move the coffee table and the couch. It’s gonna feel so good to get that winter dust out of your space!

Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to turn your attention to your outdoor spaces. Start by sweeping your patios and decks, and then pressure wash (it’s fun! A bit scary!) to remove any dirt or grime. Next, clean any outdoor furniture and cushions (hopefully you remembered to cover them up for the winter season!) and put out fresh flowers or plants. Finally, take care of any landscaping tasks, such as pruning your bushes or planting new flowers.
