When Teaching Starts Feeling Like Just Another Job…
“What is teaching for you?” they asked. I said, “It’s something I enjoy. It’s something I want to do. It’s something that makes me want to go to work.”
But only when my students are around.
Somewhere along the way, the motivation, the eagerness, the passion — all started fading. Teaching became just another job. Endless documentation, lesson planning, and screen time replaced the joy of classroom interactions.
I started questioning, “If I have to sit in front of a screen all day, why not just take a corporate job with a higher salary?”
Well, I didn’t. Because I love my little learners.
But what happens when stress takes over, and joy starts vanishing?
I knew I had to make a change, so I tried these strategies — and they worked!
5 Ways I Brought Back the Joy of Teaching
- Set Clear Boundaries I did my job wholeheartedly but after working hours? No checking emails. No responding to work messages. My work-life balance became non-negotiable.
2. Understand Your Learners The easiest way to make teaching effortless is to know your students well. I started incorporating activities they loved, making sure they were engaged throughout the day.
3. Learn to Say ‘NO’ As teachers, we often take on too much, forgetting we are humans, too. Saying ‘No’ to extra tasks that drained me saved my energy for what truly mattered.
4. Take Breaks (Yes, You Deserve Them!) My co-teacher and I made a pact — to start the day with tea, remind each other to drink water and take small breaks during lessons. These little moments kept us sane.
5. Seek Help Without Hesitation Struggling with a student? Ask for support. Inform your co-teachers, supervisors, or counselors. Because when things go wrong, no one will magically step in — so speak up.
