Beyond the APY Trap: What Makes a DeFi Strategy Actually Sustainable?
Decentralized finance (DeFi) is renowned for its “yield seasons,” which occur when a new project launches offering astronomical three digit APYs. It’s no surprise that capital floods into the project, and TVL increases exponentially, making everyone who joined the project look like geniuses for those few days.
The bubble bursts after the initial euphoria wears off as the yields are compressed, reward tokens get dumped, and liquidity migrates to the next big thing. The question is often asked, is there anything about DeFi that can last? To move away from the yield chasing approach and towards onchain capital management, we must stop asking which project offers the most yield and begin asking which projects are sustainable.
Sustainability Defined: Durability vs. Performance
When talking about sustainability in DeFi strategies, you should remember that sustainability is all about consistency. It’s not a sprint to hit a home run. You can consider a particular strategy sustainable if it satisfies three basic conditions:
- Consistency: It provides you with returns for months and even years instead of days.
- Organic Basis: It doesn’t depend on printer’s rewards and incentives.
- Robustness: It stays operational no matter if the market is up, down, or sideways.
Real Returns vs. “Incentive Illusion”
The most important difference between DeFi strategies is the nature of returns.
Ephemeral Returns: They appear due to the emission model adopted in some protocols. You get payments in the protocol’s governance tokens that may disappear due to price correction or slower emissions.
Real Returns: They occur due to real economic activity. Here we have such things as trading fees from decentralized exchanges or interest paid by lenders to borrowers on lending protocols.
The thing is that any real economic activity is based on some needs or utility. Thus, “Real Yield” will stay with us for a long time.
The Underlying Eroders: Risk and Cost of Execution
Your investment might show an expected rate of return of 15%, but after taking into account risk, that number drops dramatically. In order to be sustainable, you need to consider the “leakage” involved:
- Costs of Execution & Trading: Excessive trading can burn through all your gains.
- Slippage: Shuttling around large sums of money between low liquidity funds is detrimental to performance.
- Shift in Correlations: If the underlying correlation between two coins changes, it can weaken the working strategy.
Sustainable DeFi requires addressing this issues and paying attention to the bottom line.
Building Better Strategies
With the adoption of institutional DeFi frameworks comes the move from the passive “set and forget” model of farming. Effective sustainable strategy requires:
- Diversification of Strategies: Avoiding investing the entire capital into a single farm.
- Real-Time Adaptation: Making real-time changes to protect from volatile situations.
- Flexibility: Ability to change strategy when market conditions, such as interest rate climates, change.
The Concrete Approach: Engineered for Resilience
That’s where Concrete vaults make their move. Rather than reaching for the sky in a sprint to the week’s pinnacle, Concrete seeks yield sources that are not only theoretically solid but also durable.
Concrete vaults aims to:
- Favor sustainable yield sources that arise from organic demand.
- Control capital allocation through multiple strategies to avoid risks associated with relying on one platform.
- Decrease dependence on temporary “vampire” incentives.
Example: Concrete DeFi USDT Take, for example, the Concrete DeFi USDT vault. When everyone else is scrambling for unpredictable 50% yield spikes that vanish within forty-eight hours, Concrete delivers up to ~8.5% stable yield.
In theory, an 8.5% yield may seem less exciting than a spike into triple digits. In practice, however, a reliable 8.5% yield rate, supported by professional management and stable sources, often beats the “chaser” who incurs losses from slippage and token depreciation with each rotation.
The Greater Transition: Infrastructure vs. Incentives
DeFi is finally growing up. We’re moving past the era of “mercenary capital” and short-term “ponzinomics” toward real, sustainable systems. In this new era, sustainability is the only metric that matters. The protocols left standing won’t be those that bribed users with temporary rewards, but those that built the best plumbing for the future of finance. The “get rich quick” era is over; the “build for real” era is here.
